Ashe Becomes Fourth Quinnipiac Student-Athlete in School History to Earn Academic All-American Honors
HAMDEN, Connecticut – Quinnipiac women's cross country and track and field senior Niamh Ashe (East Islip, New York) has been named to the 2016-17 Academic All-American Women's Cross Country/Track & Field Third Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), as announced by the organization on Friday, June 23, 2017. Ashe, who previously was named to the Academic All-District 1 First Team by CoSIDA, becomes just the fourth Bobcat in school history to earn Academic All-American honors.
Ashe accumulated a 3.66 cumulative grade-point average as a nursing major at the time of voting. She graduated in May with her bachelor's degree.
Ashe is one of only 46 cross country/track and field student-athletes in the nation to earn a spot on the Academic All-America Team. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important contributor with at least a 3.30 cumulative G.P.A. (on a 4.0 scale) at her current institution. Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's meets and must be in at least their sophomore season. Once nominations are received, CoSIDA membership (in the All-District selection process) then vote on deserving candidates. From the pool of All-District selections, CoSIDA determines the All-American choices via a chosen panel.
Ashe closes out her career as one of the most-distinguished and decorated student-athletes in school history as she is a four-time All-MAAC performer in cross country and is just the third student-athlete in Quinnipiac's history to earn two CoSIDA Academic All-District honors (All-District in 2015-16). Ashe's 2016 cross country season was another resounding success as she led Quinnipiac to 15th place at the program's first-ever appearance at the Pre-National Invitational, a runner-up finish at the 2016 MAAC Championships held at Disney and a 14th place showing at the NCAA Northeast Regionals (best team finish since 2009). Highlighted by her runner-up finish in leading Quinnipiac to the 2015 MAAC Championship, Ashe finished as the fastest Bobcat in 18 of her 19 career appearances and is just the second in program history to finish her career with four All-Conference honors.
