HAMDEN, Conn. - Samuel Idowu scored 11 points in a 17-2 first half spurt as the Saint Peter's men's basketball team jumped ahead early and captured a 76-45 win over Quinnipiac on Thursday evening at the TD Bank Sports Center.
Saint Peter's improves its record to 13-12 overall and 9-6 with the win, while Quinnipiac falls to 10-15 overall and 7-8 in the MAAC. The Bobcats were held to a season low in points, falling below their earlier low-water mark of 54 set in their first meeting with Saint Peter's on Jan. 9. Quinnipiac has scored 70 or more in every other MAAC game this season.
Idowu came off the bench to pour in 11 points in a span of 2:10, shooting 4-4 from the floor (3-3 from three) to help the Peacocks turn an 8-6 lead into a commanding 25-8 advantage. He started the run with a three-pointer at the 13:49 mark, and after junior guard Reggie Oliver (Apopka, Fla.) answered with a jumper, Trevis Wyche hit a three-pointer and Idowu scored the next eight points on two three-pointers and a jump hook to make it a 22-8 game with 11:39 to play in the first half. Antwon Portley then capped off the 17-2 run with a three-pointer at the 11:04 mark to push the lead to 25-8.
Quinnipiac responded to get the lead back down to 11 points at 32-21 when senior guard Daniel Harris (Tampa, Fla.) hit a three-pointer with 5:38 to go in the half. However, after junior guard Phil Winston (Lakewood, Wash. - pictured) made two foul shots to make the score 36-23 in Saint Peter's favor, the Peacocks scored the final eight points of the half to take their largest lead at 44-23.
Quinnipiac was within 52-32 at the 14:12 mark of the second half, but Saint Peter's scored the game's next 17 points, holding the Bobcats scoreless for a span of almost seven minutes until sophomore guard Andrew Robinson (Takoma Park, Md.) hit a three-pointer to end the drought.
The Bobcats did not have a player score in double figures for the first time this season, as freshman guard Peter Kiss (New York, N.Y.) led the way with nine points and Oliver added eight. Freshman guard Mikey Dixon (New Castle, Del.) was held to six points, after scoring only eight in the first meeting with the Peacocks. He has scored 13 or more in 19 of the last 21 games, with both games with the Peacocks being the only exceptions.
Quinnipiac did hold a 44-35 edge in the rebounding department, including 20 offensive boards, but the Peacocks committed only eight turnovers and held a 22-1 edge in points off turnovers for the game.
Idowu finished in a three-way tie for team high honors in scoring for Saint Peter's with 14 points, matching Wyche and Quadir Welton. Cavon Baker also added 12 off the bench for the Peacocks on 5-6 shooting.
