LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – Jimmie Taylor had 37 points as the Rider Men's Basketball took a high-scoring 112-107 win over Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium, a game which saw Quinnipiac break its Division I single-game scoring record in a losing cause.
With the win, the Broncs improve to 14-12 overall and 7-8 in the MAAC, while the Bobcats fall to 10-16 overall and 7-9 in league play with the loss. Each team scored 65 points in the second half as the Bobcats tried to complete a furious comeback from an 18-point deficit late, but came up short. Quinnipiac set a new Division I record for points scored in a game with 107, passing the old mark of 106 set against Division II Concordia on Nov. 22, 2005.
Junior forward Chaise Daniels (Meriden, Conn.) led the Bobcats with 23 points on 11-13 shooting from the floor, while junior guard Phil Winston (Lakewood, Wash.) scored all of his career-high 19 points in the second half. Sophomore guard Andrew Robinson (Takoma Park, Md.) also had a career-high 17 for Quinnipiac on five three-pointers and two foul shots.
The Bobcats trailed by five at the half (47-42) and came out with a quick surge to start the second half to go up by six. Winston started the half by getting a layup and a foul, and after he missed the ensuing foul shots, Daniels got the rebound and kicked the ball to Winston for a tying three. After Rider went ahead by two, freshman guard Mikey Dixon (New Castle, Del.) knocked down a three-pointer for a 50-49 lead.
However, a five-minute scoring drought in the middle of the second half proved to be Quinnipiac's demise. After going ahead 63-62 on a lay-up from freshman guard Peter Kiss (New York, N.Y.) off an inbounds pass with 13:06 left, Rider went on a 17-0 run to take an 79-63 lead before Winston ended the drought with two foul shots.
After Rider took its largest lead at 18 points, the Bobcats kept fighting, as Robinson came off the bench to knock down four straight three-pointers to help Quinnipiac get all the back to within six points at 99=93 with 2:07 left. Rider, though, was able to make enough foul shots down the stretch to keep the Bobcats at arm's length as they held on for a 112-107 win.
Quinnipiac trailed just 47-42 at the half after facing a shooting barrage from Rider in the early going, which made its first eight three-point attempts. The Broncs led by as many as 11 points twice, the second coming when Xavier Lundy hit his team's eighth three-pointer without a miss with 6:58 left in the half, making the score 37-26.
However, Daniels scored on a spin move down low with 1:03 left, giving him 12 first-half points, to get the Rider lead down from 10 points to eight, and Kiss hit a three to close out the first-half scoring with the Bobcats down only five. Taylor was 4-4 from beyond the arc in the first half for 14 points for Rider, while Khalil Thomas had a team-high 15 points in the opening half.
Kiss finished with 17 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals, and Dixon added 15 as the Bobcats had five players with 15 or more points. Winston added eight assists to go with his 19 points, while Daniels matched his career high with five assists. Winston had not scored in double figures this season, his first with the Bobcats (with a high of eight points), while Robinson passed his previous high of 15 points set last year against Marist. Khalil Thomas had 21 points, Kealan Washington-Ives had 19 points and 12 assists and Norville Carey had 17 points for Rider.
Quinnipiac will have six days off until it returns to action, when it hosts Fairfield on Friday at 9 p.m. in a game that will be televised on ESPNU.
