NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – The Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team lost in non-conference action to Yale, 21-3, from Reese Stadium in New Haven on Tuesday evening.
The loss drops the Bobcats to 1-1 on the season while remaining winless in five meetings all-time against the Bulldogs. Yale picks up their first win of 2017 as the Bulldogs even their record at 1-1.
Loren Antonacci (Smithtown, New York) scored two of the three Bobcat goals on the night for her third career multi-goal game. Ellie Swenson (Ipswich, Massachusetts) accounted for the other Quinnipiac goal for her first tally of the season and just the fourth of her career. Emily Byrne (Huntington, New York) added one assist on Antonacci's second marker to give her a team-leading three helpers on the season.
Brianna Fitzgerald (Norwalk, Connecticut) led the defensive charge with two caused turnovers and two draw controls while Allison Kuhn (Kingsville, Maryland) tallied five shots to lead the Bobcats.
The Bulldogs took control from the opening draw control as Yale scored seven unanswered to begin play, while building a 6-0 lead after less than five minutes of action. Hope Hanley had a hand, either scoring or assisting on five of the first six Yale goals, to help build a massive hole for the Bobcats early.
On Quinnipiac's first extended offensive possession, Antonacci was bit with some bad luck as her blast from close range clanged off the crossbar. She later bounced back with the first Bobcat goal as her unassisted tally make it 7-1 with 18:29 remaining in the first half.
The Bobcats continued to press forward despite the deficit as Swenson took a feed along the right wing, worked her way into the teeth of the Yale defense and ripped off a shot that beat the Yale keeper low, bringing the score to 8-2 midway through the first half.
Unfortunately, Yale's play was much too strong for the Bobcats to keep pace as the Bulldogs scored 13 of the final 14 goals on the evening including eight unanswered before the final horn sounded on the 21-3 loss for Quinnipiac.
Hanley was dominant for Yale, recording 10 points (four goals, six assists) while Tess McEvoy (two goals, two assists) and Maggie Pizzo (three goals, one assist) added four points apiece to lead the Yale offensive attack.
Next up for the Bobcats is a third straight Connecticut foe as Quinnipiac heads to Sacred Heart next Wednesday for a 3 PM non-conference tilt.
