RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Quinnipiac men's basketball team had a double-digit Manhattan lead down to one point with nine minutes to go, but Manhattan pulled away down the stretch for a 95-74 win on Sunday evening at Draddy Gymnasium.
Freshman guard Mikey Dixon (New Castle, Del.) had his second straight double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Chaise Daniels (Meriden, Conn.) had 15 points and 13 rebounds. With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 10-18 overall and 7-11 in the MAAC with two regular season games left. Manhattan, which had three players score 20 or more, improves to 10-19 overall and 6-12 in the MAAC with the win.
Manhattan led by three at the half, and went ahead 58-47 on a Zavier Turner layup. However, the Bobcats stormed back as Dixon had a four-point play and made two foul shots with 9:35 left to cut the lead down to 63-62. The Bobcats then had the ball with a chance to take the lead but turned it over, the first of three straight turnovers that sparked an 8-0 Jasper run to get the lead up to 71-62. A Daniels foul shot with 7:10 left closed the lead to 72-66, but the Jaspers scored the next nine points to put the game away with an 81-66 lead.
The Bobcats forged ahead 20-14 midway through the first half without relying on their three top scorers (Mikey Dixon, Peter Kiss, Chaise Daniels) as other players accounted for the first 20 Bobcat points. Sophomore forward Abdulai Bundu (Upper Marlboro, Md.) hit his first four shots, while scoring the first seven points for the Bobcats, while guards Reggie Oliver (Apopka, Fla.), Andrew Robinson (Takoma Park, Md.) and Phil Winston (Lakewood, Wash.) each knocked down a three to put the Bobcats ahead by six.
Manhattan flipped the momentum, though, and went ahead by as many as eight points in the first half at 39-31 on an Aaron Walker, Jr. basket with 1:10 left. However, Robinson knocked down an 18-footer and Oliver closed out the half with a 25-foot bomb to bring the Bobcats within 39-36 at the break.
Zane Waterman led Manhattan with 26 points on 8-13 shooting, while Calvin Crawford had 22 on 8-14 shooting and Aaron Walker, Jr. had 20 on 7-13 shooting. Bundu finished with 13 points and Oliver 11 for the Bobcats, who had four players in double figures.
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Thursday for a road game at Marist, before closing out the regular season at home on Sunday with a home game against Rider at 2 p.m.
