HAMDEN, Conn. - Tyler Nelson tied the score on a layup with just 0.1 seconds left in regulation as the Fairfield men's basketball team spoiled a valiant Quinnipiac comeback with an 89-86 overtime win on Friday evening at the TD Bank Sports Center.
With the win, Fairfield improves to 14-11 overall and 9-7 in the MAAC while Quinnipiac falls to 10-17 overall and 7-10 in the MAAC with the loss. The road team has now won the last seven games in the series between the intra-state rivals, with the last six all decided by five poitns or less (including Fairfield's three wins at the TD Bank Center all coming in overtime).
Freshman guard Mikey Dixon (New Castle, Del.) had his first career double-double for the Bobcats with 24 points and 11 rebounds, while fellow freshman guard Peter Kiss (New York, N.Y.) was a fraction of a second away from being the hero in regulation for the second straight game against the Stags after making the go-ahead basket with 31 seconds left and following with a blocked shot (Kiss had the game-winning jumper with 1.9 seconds left on Feb. 6 at Fairfield in a 73-71 win). Nelson finished with 24 points and 12 assists to lead the Stags, including 10 assists in the first half alone.
The Bobcats had a furious comeback after trailing by 16 in the second half and 10 with 5:40 to go at 73-63. A jumper from Chaise Daniels (Meriden, Conn.) in the paint closed the lead to 74-73 with 1:24 left and after the Bobcats earned a defensive rebound, Kiss made the go-ahead basket on a drive from the left wing over two Fairfield players to give Quinnipiac its first lead of the second half at 75-74 with 31 seconds left.
Fairfield then seemed to have a go-ahead basket on the way as Nelson found big man Amadou Sidibe alone in the paint after rolling to the basket, but Kiss came out of nowhere to block the shot and then hit two foul shots with nine seconds left to give Quinnipiac a 77-74 lead. The Bobcats fouled on purpose to deny a tying three-point attempt, and Fairfield's Curtis Cobb knocked down both with five seconds left to close to one. Junior guard Phil Winston (Lakewood, Wash.) had his first foul shot with 3.6 left rattle out, but he made the second to make it a two point game.
Fairfield was out of timeouts but got the tying basket as the inbounds pass was whipped ahead to Sidibe at midcourt. Sidibe then passed the ball laterally to a streaking Nelson, who was able to get to the rim and finish the lay-up with just 0.1 seconds left on the clock to force overtime with the score tied at 78-78.
Jerry Johnson, Jr. then had eight of Fairfield's 11 points in the extra session to help the Stags to the win. He had a two-pointer in the paint and a three-pointer in the corner to put Fairfield ahead 83-79, and then added another jumper in the paint to make the score 87-82 with 1:23 left. Dixon answered with a short jumper to close to three, and a Daniels follow-up dunk made the score 88-86 with 38 seconds left.
Kiss had a defensive rebound off a Nelson miss with 20 seconds left and started to make a drive at the other end, but collided with Johnson, and the ball came loose, where Johnson picked it up with just three seconds left. He made one of two, and Kiss was able to get a clean look from 25 feet, but it missed as the Stags captured the win.
Winston finished with a career-high 11 assists for the Bobcats, seven of which came in the second half. Dixon's 11 rebounds passed his previous high of eight, while Kiss had a strong all-around line with 17 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals. Daniels added 18 points and seven rebounds as well for the Bobcats. Johnson ended the day with 19 points, while Sidibe had 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Stags.
Quinnipiac is back in action on Sunday when it takes on Manhattan for a 6 p.m. contest.
