WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Freshman guard Peter Kiss (New York, N.Y.) had a career-high 22 points, but MAAC-leading Monmouth pulled away in the final four minutes to take a 95-76 win on Friday evening at the OceanFirst Bank Center.
With the win, Monmouth improves to 17-5 overall and 9-2 in the MAAC, maintaining a one-game lead in the conference over Saint Peter's, which stands at 8-3 after a win yesterday. Quinnipiac slips to 8-13 overall and 5-6 in the MAAC with the loss. Monmouth has also now won the last four meetings in the series after Quinnipiac had a 10-game win streak from 2010-11 through 2014-15.
Quinnipiac was down seven at the half and stayed within 7-12 points for most of the second half. A Kiss spinning layup with 5:32 to go made the score 79-72, and after Monmouth scored, freshman guard Mikey Dixon (New Castle, Del.) hit a floated in the paint to cut it to 81-74. The Bobcats then picked up a steal and had a three-pointer in the air to cut it to four, but it rimmed out and Monmouth closed out on a 14-2 run by holding the Bobcats to only two foul shots the rest of the way.
Kiss also hit a three-pointer with 10:26 left to cut the lead to 66-59, as close as the Bobcats had come after the half. The Bobcats were called for a delay of game technical after the shot, and Justin Robinson hit the technical and then a three-pointer to push the lead back up to 11.
Quinnipiac stayed within 49-42 at the break after Monmouth threatened to break the game open. The Hawks led by as many as 13 points (40-27) with 7:32 left in the half and Dixon on the bench after picking up his second foul. The Bobcats were able to respond, though, and closed to within six at 46-40 on a pair of Kiss foul shots with 1:01 left. Seaborn hit a three-pointer for Monmouth to push the lead back up to nine, but junior forward Chaise Daniels (Meriden, Conn.) had a tip in to make to a 49-42.
Daniels finished with a double-double for the Bobcats with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Dixon finished with 13 points. Kiss almost had a double-double as well, finishing with nine rebounds to go along with his 22 points. Robinson (22 points) and Micah Seaborn (21 points) led the way for the Hawks, who picked up their seventh straight win.
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Monday when it hosts Siena for a 7 p.m. contest at the TD Bank Sports Center, which will be aired live on Sportsnet New York (SNY).
