NEW YORK, New York – The Quinnipiac University field hockey team lost to Bucknell, 3-2 in overtime, in a non-conference match-up at Columbia University in New York, New York. With the loss, Quinnipiac drops to 1-7 on the season while Bucknell improves to 4-3 on the year.
NCAA Division I defensive saves leader Angie King (South Windsor, Connecticut) added two more defensive saves to give her seven for the year while she also scored her first goal of the season off a penalty shot for her first marker of the year. Junior Felicia Costanzo (Yorktown Heights, New York) scored her second of the season.
Bucknell's Stephanie Dressler put the Bison out in front with her first goal of the season just under seven minutes into the first half. Off a corner, Amy Mucelli inserted the ball to stick-stop Estelle Palandjian who held it for Dressler. Dressler unleashed a blast through traffic that found the back of the cage to give the Bison a 1-0 lead.
The Bobcats applied pressure over the next several minutes before a Bucknell foul resulted in a penalty shot for senior captain Angie King (South Windsor, Connecticut). King converted on the penalty shot for her first goal of the season, burying the ball in the right corner to tie the game at 1-1.
King picked up the Bobcats on the other end of the field as well, recording defensive saves on back-to-back corners as Bucknell threated halfway through the first half. King first saved a rebound bid from the doorstep before deflecting away a Bucknell bid on the next corner.
The Bobcats were able to capitalize with less than ten minutes to play in the first frame. Off a broken corner set, Lauren Belskie (Hillsborough, New Jersey) was able to send a shot on goal that was stopped by Bucknell goalkeeper Emily Finn with a kick save, but Felicia Costanzo (Yorktown Heights, New York) picked up the rebound and slammed home the go-ahead goal.
With eight minutes to play in regulation, Bucknell scored its second goal off a corner for the day. Dressler received the ball at the top of the circle and blasted a shot into a scrum in front of the Bobcats' cage. Estelle Palandjian was able to get her stick on the shot and deflect it past Quinnipiac goalkeeper Hannah Teicher (Bethesda, Maryland) to tie the game at 2-2.
With seven minutes left in overtime, Dressler took a pass from Anna Wills off a corner and popped the ball past Teicher for the game-winner in overtime.
Quinnipiac returns to action when it takes on Liberty in a BIG EAST Conference match-up in Lynchburg, Virginia on Friday, Sept. 23 at 3 p.m. That game can be seen live on ESPN3.
