Two Program Records Fall (Both in Field Events) Highlighted by Carly Timpson's Victory in the Hammer Throw
DAY ONE RESULTS
LAWRENCEVILLE, New Jersey – Several veterans came through where expected while some fresh faces impressed on the biggest stage as the Quinnipiac women's outdoor track and field team wrapped up a successful day one at the MAAC Championships held on the campus of Rider University. Through five scored events, Quinnipiac currently sits in fourth place (out of eight teams) with 30 accumulated points. Two-time reigning champion Monmouth owns the day one lead with 59 points while Iona (34) and Rider (32) round out the remainder of the top three.
"We got many women to advance into the finals and had a great opening day," said Quinnipiac head coach Carolyn Martin. "The staff is all looking forward to some great racing tomorrow as we're well positioned to score big numbers in events all across the board."
The 2016 MAAC Co-Most Outstanding Field Performer during the indoor season, freshman Carly Timpson (Narragansett, Rhode Island) made a statement in the early going as she captured the hammer throw title with an incredible program record throw of 53.75m. A little over two months following her breakout performance at the indoor championships that saw her secure the weight throw title, Timpson bested the field of 15 competitors by more than three meters as it easily bested her previous program record of 52.84m achieved two weeks ago at Stony Brook. The reigning MAAC Field Athlete of the Week award winner adds another notch to her resume, becoming the first Bobcat to score a first place finish in a field event at an outdoor conference championship in program history.
In terms of individual events, none played out better for Quinnipiac than their incredible effort in the 200m preliminary as four of the top seven fastest times were all achieved by Bobcats as they'll head into the finals on Sunday with a chance to make a big move on the team leaderboard. Shameal Samuels (Hartford, Connecticut) led the Bobcat contingent with the fastest preliminary time (24.48 seconds) which also stands as more than one second fastest than the second-fastest 200m sprint on the day. Finishing runner-up to Samuels was Francine Jacque (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) with a time of 25.53 seconds while Jessica Lee (25.71) and Alea Simons (26.06) help the Bobcats account for half of the entire 200m finals field.

Another season full of development in the field events continues to pay dividends as Jenny Mears (Vernon, Connecticut) came through with the best performance of her career, placing third in the javelin throw with a new program record of 41.12m. One year after placing fifth at the MAAC Championships with a throw of 37.84m, Mears has boosted her PR by more than three full meters and earns her best individual finishing place at the MAAC Championships in her career. Emily Dryzgula (North Branford, Connecticut) joined Mears in the javelin throw finals and placed eighth overall with a new personal-best of 32.19m.

More points came for the Bobcats in the long jump as Leah Pfrommer (Killingworth, Connecticut) and Bonnie Pisciotta (Lindenhurst, New York) came through with third and fourth place showings, respectively. Pfrommer vaulted up from her fifth place finish at the 2015 MAAC Championships with a jump of 5.52m on Saturday while Pisciotta matched her fourth place result from a year ago with a jump of 5.51m.

After starting the day off well in the field events, the sprinters showed well as the meet extended into the early afternoon as the Bobcats posted the top two preliminary times in the 400m as both Nia Baker (56.65) and Kristen Ulrich (57.68) busted through with the first and second-fastest times, respectively, heading into the finals on Sunday. One year after Baker and Ulrich placed third and fourth overall at the 2015 MAAC Championships, the Bobcat duo is positioned nicely to improve in what is both their senior seasons.

Moving into the hurdle events, the Bobcats showed well in both lengths as the 2016 New England Indoor 60m hurdles champion Jessica Lee (Montgomery, New Jersey) moves into the finals of the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.08 seconds. Lee looks to better upon her fourth place finish from the 2015 MAAC Championships on Sunday afternoon. Meanwhile in the 400m hurdles, freshman Marlo Wehrer (Pequannock, New Jersey) clocked in with the fastest time of the preliminary round at 1:02.12 as she outkicked a pair of Monmouth Hawks. She will be joined in the finals by Christina Barbaro (Elk Township, New Jersey) who advanced to the finals thanks to her new personal-best time of 1:04.16 which was good enough for seventh in the prelims.

A pair of Bobcats moved on to the finals of the 100m dash as Alea Simons (Piscataway, New Jersey) and Pisciotta advanced in second and fifth place, respectively. Simons busted through with a new personal-best time of 12.29 seconds, which also jumps her from fourth to second on the all-time record list at Quinnipiac, while Pisciotta also recorded a new personal-best time of 12.43 seconds (tied fourth-fastest at QU). The duo will be making a repeat appearance in the 100m finals as they finished in sixth (Simons) and eighth (Pisciotta) in 2015.

In the middle distance preliminaries, Kaleigh Roberts (Higganum, Connecticut) impressed in the 1500m prelim as she clocked in with the third-fastest time at 4:34.33 while she will be joined in the finals by Tracy Campbell (Wall Township, New Jersey) who sits with the 10th-fastest time of 4:37.67. Later in the 800m, Cori Reid (Old Saybrook, Connecticut) and Alyson Caron (Andover, New Jersey) earned spots in the finals with times of 2:14.42 and 2:14.83, respectively. Reid's time of 2:14.42 smashed her previous personal-best of 2:16.56 as she moves all the way up from eight to fourth all-time in the 800m at Quinnipiac.

Quinnipiac also saw a pair of runners pick up one point each in the long distance events as Cameron Chaplen (Thomaston, Connecticut) earned an eighth place finish in the 3000m steeplechase as she clocked in at 11:51.56. Victoria Maceira (Bethel, Connecticut) also earned one point with her eighth place finish in the 10,000m as she posted a time of 39:14.54.
The Bobcats will be in action again tomorrow for day two of the MAAC Championships as Quinnipiac looks to build on their opening success in the first day of competition.
