The Bobcats Moved into a Tie for Sixth Place After the Sweep
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Quinnipiac softball team moved into a tie for sixth place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with a sweep over Rider on Saturday afternoon, 8-0 and 9-3. With the results, the Bobcats improved to 9-9 in the MAAC and 24-27 overall. They now sit in a tie with Siena, but own the tiebreaker after sweeping the Saints earlier this year.
The top six teams will earn a berth in the MAAC postseason tournament. Quinnipiac will conclude the regular season with a 1 p.m. home doubleheader against Niagara tomorrow, who is just one game behind both the Bobcats and Saints. Meanwhile, Siena will host the top seeded Marist Red Foxes at 12 p.m..
Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California) led the team in hits on the day, going a combined 5-for-8 at the plate with two runs batted in.
Dani Edmands (Northborough, Massachusetts) went 4-for-7 with two doubles, three runs scored and two runs batted in.
In the second game, Keilani Finley (Alameda, California) nearly completed the cycle, tallying a double, triple and a home run in a 3-for-4 performance which also included two runs scored and four RBI's.
GAME ONE
Starting pitcher Sydney Robey (Glenmoore, Pennsylvania) improved to 10-12 in the circle this season after pitching four shutout innings in the first game. Robey gave up only two hits while striking out two Broncs on the day.
Kendall Brundrett (San Diego, California) closed out the game with two shutout innings, allowing just two hits.
Magana went 3-for-4 in the opener, with two RBI's and a double while Abby Johnson (Chelmsford, Massachusetts) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base.
After two scoreless innings, the Bobcats took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Johnson led off the inning with a single up the middle and advanced to third after a stolen base followed by a wild pitch. Maria Ascher (Little Canada, Minnesota) then drew a walk and stole second base to put two runners in scoring position with no outs. Freshman Sarah Heimbach (Greenwich, New York) sent home Johnson on an RBI ground out before Magana recorded an RBI single to give QU a two-run lead.
In the fifth inning, the Bobcats tacked on five more runs for a 7-0 advantage. After back-to-back hits by Johnson and Ascher, Heimbach was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Magana fouled out, but Edmands came through with a two-RBI double to left field. Heimbach then came around to score on a fielding error by the Rider third baseman before the Broncs tallied the second out on a fly ball. With runners on second and third, Taylor Troyan (Boca Raton, Florida) connected for a two-RBI single up the middle, scoring the sixth and seventh runs.
Quinnipiac scored a final run in the sixth on Magana's third hit of the day, an RBI single up the middle.
GAME TWO
Finley led the offense in game two, going 3-for-4 with a double, triple and a home run while adding four RBI's in the contest.
Edmands was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles and two runs scored.
Emily Czaja (Palmer, Massachusetts) also recorded three hits, going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in.
Casey Herzog (Wappingers Falls, New York) improved to 12-13 on the year, picking up the win on the mound. Herzog pitched four innings of no-hit ball while striking out three batters.
The Bobcats jumped out to a quick start in the second game of the twin bill, taking a 2-0 lead in the first. With two outs, Edmands hit her second double of the day and came around to score on Finley's two-run shot to center field. The home run was Finley's team-leading fourth of the year.
In the third, the Bobcats scored four more runs to take a 6-0 advantage. Magana started the inning with a single to left field and advanced to third on Edmand's third double of the afternoon. Finley stepped to the plate and smashed a two-RBI double to left center field. After Erin Larsen (Orlando, Florida) walked, Herzog reached on a fielder's choice while Finley was put out at third. A second fielder's choice by Johnson loaded the bases before two runs came around to score on a single up the middle by Czaja.
The Broncs cut the lead to 6-2 after a home run in the fifth and a run on three straight singles in the sixth.
Quinnipiac added three more runs in their last at bats for a 9-2 advantage. Edmands was hit by a pitch and then thrown out at home on Finley's triple to right to start off the frame. Sydney Dennis (Kingwood, Texas) then reached first on a walk to put runners on the corner. Three straight hits by Troyan, Johnson and Czaja scored the Bobcats' final three runs.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Broncs connected for back-to-back doubles to make the final score, 9-3.
