QU Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Canisius, Recording a Walk-Off Win in Game One

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac softball team split a MAAC doubleheader against Canisius on Friday afternoon despite multiple weather delays and poor conditions. The Bobcats took the first game, 2-1 in walk-off fashion with a bases loaded walk while dropping the second contest, 3-1.
With the results, the Bobcats move into seventh place in the MAAC standings at 7-9 and 22-27 overall. The top six seeds make the postseason tournament with Niagara currently occupying the final spot at 8-8. Quinnipiac is tied with Siena in seventh with four conference games remaining, including two against the Purple Eagles.
GAME ONE
Sarah Heimbach (Greenwich, New York) led the Bobcats' offense in game one, tallying two doubles in a 2-for-3 performance at the plate while adding an RBI and the game-winning run.
Dani Edmands (Northborough, Massachusetts) also went 2-for-3 with a double while Taylor Troyan (Boca Raton, Florida) hit a double in her only at bat.
Sydney Robey (Glenmoore, Pennsylvania) earned her ninth win of the season with a strong performance in the circle. Robey gave up seven hits and just one run while striking out four batters.
In both the first and second innings, the Bobcat infield turned a double play, helping to keep the Golden Griffins off the scoreboard. In the top of the first, Canisius put runners on first and second with one out. The next batter grounded into a fielder's choice while second baseman Emily Czaja (Palmer, Massachusetts) flipped the ball from her glove to Maria Ascher (Little Canada, Minneosta) at shortstop who tagged second and fired to third to get the lead runner and end the inning.
In the following inning, the Golden Griffins had a runner at second after a one out double. The next batter hit a ground ball to third, but the Bobcats recorded a 5-3-5 double play to end the frame. First baseman Erin Larsen (Orlando, Florida) caught the runner trying to advance to third with a perfect throw.
After four scoreless innings, Canisius took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth. With one out, Samantha Sharkey reached first on an infield single and advanced to second with a stolen base. After a ground ball out pushed Sharkey to third, the runner came around to score on the second infield single of the inning.
Quinnipiac answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame off back-to-back doubles. Troyan came in to pinch hit and smashed a double to deep right field. Heimbach followed up with an RBI-double to right center, tying the score 1-1.
In the top of the seventh, Canisius threatened to take the lead heading into the Bobcats' final at bat. With a runner on third and one out, the Griffin batter pulled back a bunt attempt and the runner was caught halfway down the baseline. The Bobcats recorded the second out after a rundown as the Griffin runner missed the plate trying to score.
In their finals at bats, the Bobcats walked-off on a bases load walk to end the game. With runners on first and second, the game was halted for about two hours due to weather conditions. Canisius recorded the second out on a fly ball to center field but then hit Keilani Finley (Alameda, California) to load the bases. Robey stepped up to the plate and drew a walk after working a full count, to send Heimbach in for the winning run.
GAME TWO
Quinnipiac held the lead for five consecutive innings in the second game, but could not hold off the Golden Griffins in their final at bat.
Starting pitcher Casey Herzog (Wappingers Falls, New York) took the loss in the circle, but allowed just five hits and three runs while striking out nine batters over seven innings. Herzog held the Golden Griffins to just one hit through the first six innings.
Larsen led the offense with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate including a triple and run batted in.
The Bobcats jumped out to a quick start in game two, taking a 1-0 lead over the Golden Griffins in the first inning. With two outs, Finley was hit by a pitch for the second time on the day. Edmands then advanced Finley to second on a walk, before Larsen drove in Finley with an RBI single up the middle.
In the top of the seventh, Canisius took a 3-1 lead thanks to three straight hits and a total of four inning the inning.
Quinnipiac is back in action tomorrow, Saturday, May 7 when they travel to New Jersey for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against the Rider Broncs. The Bobcats will conclude the regular season on Sunday, May 8 with a home doubleheader against the Niagara Purple Eagles at noon.
