Shameal Samuels Gives Bobcat Fans an Inside Look Into an Afternoon of Training at Hodges Stadium in the Day Leading Up to the First Round of the 400m
As written by Shameal Samuels...
This morning I woke up at 7:30 AM, although my alarm was set for 8:30 which is when I actually got out of bed. I promptly began my normal morning ritual where I listened to "Today's Hip Hop & Pop Hits Radio" on Pandora while texting a few of my teammates about tomorrow's race. After, I met up with Coach Carolyn and Coach Steve at 9:30 in the lobby and walked into the buffet area together to get our breakfast.
There were fresh strawberries and pineapples as well as some crispy golden bacon and waffles. After breakfast I went back up to my room, while Steve and Carolyn went to Winn Dixie's to shop for snacks and water for the weekend. While in my room I chatted with Bonnie (Pisciotta) and sent a few snaps to Nia (Baker), Alea (Simons), and Kristen (Ulrich) until around 12:30 when I began to get ready. I packed up my spikes, water bottle and some snacks and headed to the lobby where I met the coaches.
The three of us headed over to the track at Northern Florida University. I began with my five minute warm-up jog followed by dynamics. I then put my spikes on to do a few striders and got down on the burning hot track to do a few block starts. Coach Steve gave me some advice on how to better push out of the blocks for my race tomorrow as well as some pointers on where it would be best to accelerate, where to push, and where to relax. After all of this I did a short cool down, which consisted of two laps around the infield then some static stretching and rolling out. We still had to pick up my bib number and other things for tomorrow, so Coach Carolyn went to get those, while Coach Steve and I figured out what to eat for lunch.

The original plan was to go to Panera Bread, but my GPS brought us back to the hotel. We then decided to find a place in the plaza by the hotel. The end result was a solid choice, "American Grill". We had fries, turkey club, some fancy burger, and a fancy chicken sandwich. After lunch Steve and I went back to our rooms, while Carolyn headed back to NFU for a coaches meeting.
Back at my room I talked to Bonnie for a while as well as my High School coach for a little bit. I sent some snapchats and called my mom to tell her about my day so far. After a few hours we headed to a nice restaurant that had delicious food. Of course I ordered my typical shrimp dish, which is any item menu with shrimp, although I was still stuffed from lunch. We chatted for a while and enjoyed our meals together until we were done and headed back to the hotel. With a good meal and my stomach and a goodnight sleep ahead, I am ready and excited for what tomorrow will bring!
