Bobcats Set Three Program Records (100m Hurdles, Javelin, Hammer Throw) on the Day
STONY BROOK, New York – Led by four individual event winners – Jessica Lee (100m hurdles), Emily Wolff (3000m), Marlo Wehrer (400m hurdles) and Jenny Mears (javelin throw) – the Quinnipiac women's outdoor track and field team racked up 140 points on the way to a second place finish at Stony Brook's Wolfie Invitational on Saturday.
Jessica Lee (Montgomery, New Jersey) continues her torrid stretch as the sophomore easily claimed the 100m hurdles title, running her event in a scintillating 13.97 seconds to break her own program record. With the record-setting time, Lee sets a new Quinnipiac record in the 100m hurdles for the third time this season including the second time in her last three appearances. But perhaps most impressive is Lee went from a personal-best of 14.26 seconds and cut 0.29 seconds off to become the first Bobcat in program history to run a 100m hurdles event in under 14 seconds.
Emily Wolff (Highlands Ranch, Colorado) made her first 3000m appearance a memorable one as she clocked in at 10:12.98 to best a field of 18 runners for the first place finish. Racing for just the second time overall in the outdoor season, Wolff looks to continue to progress and lead herself into a strong showing with the MAAC Championships just two weeks away.
The freshman Marlo Wehrer (Pequannock, New Jersey) continues to progress as she picked up her first career victory in the 400m hurdles with a new personal-best time of 1:02.96, besting a field of 10 total competitors. For the second straight week, Wehrer clocked in with a new career-best time in the 400m hurdles as her time on Saturday bested her previous best of 1:03.54 by nearly one full second.
The final event win for the Bobcats on the day came in the javelin throw as senior Jenny Mears (Vernon, Connecticut) threw the best javelin of her career at 40.67m to pick up her first career individual victory. Mears' new career-high also goes down as a new program record as she bested a field of 10 throwers. In her third javelin appearance of 2016, Mears has picked up a new season-high in all of her appearances in the javelin this season.
In a day filled with landmark achievements, the Bobcats started the day with a strong showing in the 4x100m relay as the team of Lee, Alea Simons (Piscataway, New Jersey), Francine Jacque (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) and Shameal Samuels (Hartford, Connecticut) combined to clock in at 47.36 seconds to earn the second place finish out of five teams. The time of 47.36 seconds goes down as the second-fastest in program history.
A pair of the Bobcat stalwarts came through with impressive showings in the 1500m as Kaleigh Roberts (Higganum, Connecticut) and Tracy Campbell (Wall Township, New Jersey) placed second and third, respectively, in a field of 23 runners. Running side-by-side throughout, Roberts crossed the line in 4:36.10 while Campbell just missed a new personal-best with her time of 4:36.83 on the day.
The success in the sprint events continued in the 100m dash as the Bobcats filled the sixth through ninth place positions in the standings when the dust settled on the competition. Nia Baker (Brooklyn, New York) shined with a new personal-best, which also goes down as the second-fastest in program history, with a time of 12.39 seconds to take sixth place. Kristen Ulrich (Clark, New Jersey) also came through with a new PR as she clocked in at 12.51 seconds to take eighth place.
Earning a top five in the 3000m steeplechase was Cameron Chaplen (Thomaston, Connecticut) as the junior posted a time of 11:46.01 to take third out of eight runners. Classmate Alyson Caron (Andover, New Jersey) also picked up a top five result in the 800m as she ran the event in 2:16.33 to take fourth out of 41 competitors.
Wehrer wasn't the only Bobcat who impressed in the 400m hurdles as Christina Barbaro (Elk Township, New Jersey) placed third overall (out of 10) with a new PR time of 1:04.17. Barbaro shaved more than one full second off her previous career-high of 1:05.36 which had stood since the 2015 New England Championships.
Baker continued her well-rounded day with a third place finish out of 25 sprinters in the 200m as she tallied her second PR of the day with a time of 25.20 seconds.
Quinnipiac saw many success stories in the field events as freshman Carly Timpson (Narragansett, Rhode Island) shined with a program record throw of 52.84m in the hammer throw as she took second place in the event. Mears joined Timpson, becoming just the second Bobcat in program history to compete in the field event, throwing 20.46m to take eighth place.
Mackenzie Merkel (Hillsdale, New Jersey) added two top five results for the Bobcats, first in the shot put as she threw 11.46m to take third out of 11 and later in the discus as she threw 36.40m to take fourth place.
With one remaining non-championship meet remaining in the 2016 schedule, the Bobcats look to continue to progress as the championship season nears. That one non-championship meet is slated for Sunday, May 1 as Quinnipiac will compete in the Yale Springtime Invitational.
