POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Senior attack Ryan Keenan (Oshawa, Ontario) tied the score with just three seconds left in regulation and sophomore midfielder Anthony Carchietta (Syosset, N.Y.) won it with just one second left in overtime, as the Quinnipiac men's lacrosse team rallied from a 5-1 deficit at the start of the fourth quarter to stun MAAC favorite Marist 8-7 on Saturday afternoon at Tenney Stadium.
With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 5-3 overall and remains perfect in the MAAC at 2-0, while avenging a defeat to Marist in the 2015 MAAC Championship game, which the Red Foxes won 16-14 at Tenney Stadium. The Red Foxes, who had won 10 straight MAAC games dating back to an 11-10 loss to Detroit in 2014, fall to 4-5 overall and 2-1 in the MAAC with the loss.
Keenan finished the game with three goals and one assist, with his fourth-quarter assist making him the 12th player in school history to reach the 100-point plateau. After following with two more goals in the fourth, Keenan ended the game with 102 points.
Sophomore midfielder Will Vitelli (Milford, Conn.) won all 19 faceoffs in the game, including 9-9 in the pivotal fourth quarter, while junior goalie Jack Brust (Baltimore, Md.) had 13 saves for the Bobcats, including two big ones in overtime.
Marist appeared to have the game won in regulation, as Joseph Radin scored his fourth goal of the game with exactly 2:00 left to break a 6-6 tie and put his team ahead 7-6. The Bobcats won the faceoff, but turned the ball over in the final minute, and the Red Foxes were a clear away from securing the win.
However, sophomore long stick midfielder Adam Bellamy (St. Catherine's, Ontario) earned a ground ball after Marist lost possession with just over 20 seconds left, and senior midfielder Nate Nibbelink (Hampstead, Md.) found Keenan behind the net with the game clock winding down. Keenan came around in front of the net and wrapped a shot past goalkeeper Brian Corrigan with three seconds left to send the game to overtime.
After the Bobcats won the opening possession of the extra session, Marist forced a turnover and Brust was called on to make a big save in transition as long pole Ralph Faiella got a clean look from five yards out. Brust then made another save in close on a shot from John Vigh, and the Bobcats were able to get to the loose ball and clear it.
The first attempt at a game-winner from junior attack Drew D'Antonio (Norwalk, Conn.) went wide, but the Bobcats were first to the end line and maintained possession. With the overtime clock winding down, Carchietta took the ball himself from behind the net around the left side and whipped a high shot past Corrigan from a tight angle with just one second left to secure the win.
Keenan got the Bobcats off to a quick start with a goal just 1:35 into the game to make the score 1-0, which is where it stood after the first quarter, but Quinnipiac to not score again until the fourth. Radin scored his third goal of the game with six seconds left in the third for Marist to seemingly give the Red Foxes control of the game at 5-1.
Sophomore attack Brian Feldman (Canandaigua, N.Y.) broke the ice for the Bobcats with a man-up goal off a feed from senior midfielder Connor Meth (Baskinng Ridge, N.J.), and Carchietta followed quickly with his first goal at the 11:32 mark to make the score 5-3. After Marist went back up 6-3, Keenan found sophomore midfielder Ryan Corcoran (Stratford, Conn.) with 4:34 to go for his 100th career point to make it 6-4.
Just 12 seconds later, Keenan scored off the faceoff on a feed from sophomore midfielder Alex Disalvo (Smithtown, N.Y.) to close the lead to 6-5. D'Antonio then tied it up on a Carchietta feed with 3:08 to go to get the Bobcats back even at 6-6, before Radin gave the Red Foxes their final lead with 2:00 left.
The Bobcats dominated ground balls, largely due to their 19-19 performance on faceoffs, finishing with 38 to Marist's 16, as Bellamy had 11 and Vitelli added six. The Red Foxes had a 36-31 edge in shots for the game, but Quinnipiac held the 14-4 edge in that category in the fourth quarter.
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Sunday, April 10 when it travels for a MAAC matchup against Detroit, which is scheduled for 11 a.m.
