QU Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Hartford with 3-0 Win in Game One

Keilani Finley Went 4-for-5 on the Day
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac softball team split a doubleheader against the Hartford Hawks on Wednesday afternoon, taking the first game, 3-0 before dropping the second, 3-1.
GAME 1
Quinnipiac recorded three runs with five hits and three walks in game one. Abby Johnson (Chelmsford, Massachusetts) and Taylor Troyan (Boca Raton, Florida) both went 1-for-2 while Johnson added two runs batted in and Troyan recorded a double and a walk.
Sophomore Casey Herzog (Wappingers Falls, New York) got the start in the circle for the Bobcats and submitted her best performance of the year. Herzog allowed a season-low two hits over seven innings while striking out five batters. With the result, the sophomore improved to 7-7 on the year.
After two scoreless innings by both sides to begin game one, the Bobcats scored one run in three consecutive innings to take a 3-0 lead after five.
In the top of the third, Troyan doubled to left center field with one out. The freshman was then thrown out at third when Maria Ascher (Little Canada, Minnesota) hit into a fielder's choice. Sarah Heimbach (Greenwich, New York) came to the plate and advanced the runner to second, reaching on an error by the Hartford pitcher. With runners on first and second, Johnson drove in the game's first run with an RBI single to left field.
Quinnipiac pushed another run across the plate in the fourth to jump out to a 2-0 advantage. Sydney Robey (Glenmoore, Pennsylvania) and Keilani Finley (Alameda, California) started off the inning with back-to-back base hits. Herzog stepped into the box and successfully laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners into scoring position. Robey then came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Emily Czaja (Palmer, Massachusetts), but Finley was thrown out at the plate for the final out.
With bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, Johnson registered her second RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly to score pinch runner Kat Vitale (Cheshire, Connecticut) and give QU a 3-0 lead.
GAME 2
The Bobcats tallied six hits in the second game, but were held to just one run, falling to the Hawks, 3-1. Finley led the offense with a season high three hits in three at bats while Dani Edmands (Northborough, Massachusetts) recorded a double, the lone Quinnipiac extra base hit in the game.
Robey was credited with the loss in game two, but gave up zero earned runs over six innings pitched. The senior did not get much offensive support as her record dropped to 4-8 on the season.
The Hawks scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the second off three hits and an error. The first two runners of the inning both reached base off a single and an infield error before advancing into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. After Robey got the second out of the frame on a popup, two consecutive hits led to the three Hartford runs.
Quinnipiac was held in check most of the game, until they threatened to send the contest into extra innings in the seventh. Finley led off with a single and Vitale came in to pinch run. Vitale advanced to second on a Hawk error before reaching third when Herzog grounded into a fielder's choice. Ascher sent Vitale home with an RBI ground ball, advancing Herzog to second. With the tying run at bat, Hartford registered the final out on a ground ball.
The Bobcats are back in action at home this weekend with the start of MAAC play. On Saturday, April 2, Quinnipiac will host Canisius for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. The following day, QU will take on Niagara for another 12 p.m. conference doubleheader.
