MAAC OPENER
After the Bobcats' previous six games were all postponed, the Quinnipiac softball team is set to host the Monmouth Hawks for their MAAC opener on Saturday, April 9. The Bobcats will take on the Hawks in Hamden at the QU Softball Field with the first game slated to begin at noon.
SCOUTING MONMOUTH
The Hawks currently occupy a 15-12 overall record and sit at 4-0 in conference action heading into the weekend doubleheader. Prior to the start of the season, Monmouth was picked to finish sixth in the league by the coaches in the MAAC Preseason Poll. The Hawks have won five of their last six games but are 7-9 on the road in 2016. Monmouth opened up MAAC play with a home sweep over Rider, taking down the Broncs 9-0 and 11-0 in just five innings. MU then fell to Princeton in a non-conference clash before taking consecutive games from Iona on the road on Wednesday. The Hawks are batting an impressive .305 as a team with six players hitting over the .300 mark. Justene Reyes leads the offense in multiple categories including batting average (.352), doubles (7), RBI's (28) and tied for the lead in hits (31). Meanwhile, Sydney Underhill and Amanda Riley head the pitching staff. Underhill occupies a 2.28 earned run average and a 9-10 record which includes five complete games, a shutout and a save. Riley holds a 2.48 ERA at 6-2 on the season with four complete games, three shutouts and two saves.
LAST TIME OUT
Last week, the Bobcats split a doubleheader against the Hartford Hawks. Quinnipiac took the first game, 3-0 before dropping the second, 3-1. The Bobcats totaled 11 hits on the day while holding the Hawks to eight.
BOSS HERZOG
In the first game against Hartford, Casey Herzog submitted her best performance of the year, allowing a season-low two hits over seven inning while striking out five batters.
FANTASTIC FINLEY
Keilani Finley led the Bobcats' offense against the Hawks on Wednesday. The junior tallied four hits on the day including a 3-for-3 performance in the second game.
AGAINST FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON
On Tuesday, the Bobcats swept a home doubleheader against the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights. Quinnipiac capture the first game, 7-1 before taking the second, 8-2. QU scored 15 runs off 19 hits while Herzog and Sydney Robey combined to allow just two earned runs on the day.
CHRIS'S GAME
On April 13, the Bobcats will host Yale in a doubleheader and will honor the memory of Chris Labbadia. On Jan. 16, 2016, assistant coach Lynn Labbadia's 19 year old son was tragically killed in a car accident. Chris will be forever known for his love, acceptance, loyalty, passion and laughter. #BEATCANCER GAME
In lieu of a "pink" game this year, Quinnipiac softball is hosting a #BeatCancer game. The Bobcats are asking those that know someone that has been affected by cancer to wear their colors in awareness to the doubleheader against Army on April 20.
DOWNTOWN ABBY
Last Friday against Maine, Abby Johnson led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo homerun over the left field fence. Johnson's first dinger of the year and third of her career gave the Bobcats an early 1-0 lead.
ROBEY IN RELIEF
In the sixth inning of last Friday's game, Sydney Robey came in to replace Herzog with the bases loaded, no outs and the Bobcats leading 4-0. The senior walked in the Black Bears' first run, but struck out three of the next four batters to limit the damage to just two runs.
BOBCAT FIRST
In the second game of the doubleheader against Maine, freshman Autumn Martin tallied her first career hit in a QU uniform with an infield single in the fifth inning.
WEEKEND DOMINANCE
Miranda Magana finished the weekend at USF with an impressive .538 (7-for-13) batting average and a .846 slugging percentage. After going 0-for-2 with a walk to begin the tournament, Magana submitted three consecutive multi-hit games. The sophomore went 2-for-2 with a double against Northwestern before going 2-for-3 with three RBIs, a triple and run scored in a 5-2 win over UMass Lowell. With the scored tied at 2-2 in the seventh inning, Magana smashed a two-run triple for the game-winning hit. The sophomore is currently riding a four-game hit streak
FIRST OF MANY
Against UMass Lowell, freshman Kendall Brundrett pitched three innings shutout innings in relief to record her first win as a Bobcat. Brundrett gave up just one hit while facing ten batters.
SHINING IN FLORIDA
Freshman Sarah Heimbach hit .393 (11-for-28) over spring break to boost her overall average to .309 on the season. Heimbach registered a .528 on base percentage and a .464 slugging percentage over the 11 games in Florida. Against Northern Kentucky, the freshman went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored.
ON DECK
Up next, the Bobcats will take a quick break from MAAC play when they host the Yale Bulldogs for Chris's Game on Wednesday, April 13. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 3 p.m. from the QU Softball Field.
