Hamden, Conn. - The Quinnipiac softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader, 3-0 and 8-3, at home against the Monmouth Hawks on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats fall to 0-2 in MAAC play and 12-17 overall while Monmouth improves to 6-0 in conference action and 17-12 on the season.
GAME 1
The first game was forced into extra innings as both sides were held scoreless through the first eight innings of the contest. In what quickly became a pitcher's duel, the Bobcats recorded just three hits in the game while the Hawks tallied eight. Monmouth broke open the tie with three runs in the top of the ninth to take the game, 3-0.
Senior Sydney Robey (Glenmoore, Pennsylvania) got the start in the circle for Quinnipiac in the MAAC opener. Robey shut down Monmouth's offense through the first eight innings before the Hawks were able to capture three runs in the top of the ninth.
Molly Jarrett (Northport, New York) went 2-for-3 against the dominant Monmouth pitching while Dani Edmands (Northborough, Massachusetts) registered the Bobcats' other hit in a 1-for-3 performance at the plate.
In the top of the first, the Hawks threatened to score with runners on second and third and two outs, but Robey got the next batter to ground out to shortstop to end the inning.
The Bobcats again escaped what could have been a dangerous inning in the top of the third. After a one out single, Monmouth put runners on first and second off a Bobcat error. The Hawks then loaded the bases with their third base hit of the inning. The next batter hit a sharp ground ball to second baseman Emily Czaja (Palmer, Massachusetts) but the sophomore fired a perfect throw to home to register the second out of the frame. Robey then forced the next hitter to ground out to shortstop, leaving three runners on base.
After the Bobcats left a runner on second base in the eighth, the Hawks' bats came alive in the top of the ninth. Monmouth scored three runs in the inning of two extra inning homeruns.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Quinnipiac put runners on first and second off a walk and an error by the Hawks' infield. Monmouth got the final batter out on a ground ball to the pitcher.
GAME 2
Quinnipiac registered ten hits in the second game, but fell to the Hawks, 8-3. Four Bobcats recorded multi-hit games in game two, including Erin Larsen (Orlando, Florida) and Maria Ascher (Little Canada, Minnesota) who both went 2-for-3 in the batters' box with a run scored. Taylor Troyan (Boca Raton, Florda) wet 2-for-4 and Abby Johnson (Chelmsford, Massachusetts) went 2-for-5 at the plate while Troyan added an RBI double and a run scored and Johnson registered a run batted in.
Freshman Kendall Brundrett (San Diego, California) was impressive from the mound in relief for the Bobcats. Brundrett came in to pitch the final 4.1 innings and allowed just one run and five hits.
Unlike the opening game, Monmouth scored four runs in their first at bats to take an early 4-0 advantage. The Hawks took the lead off four singles and two walks in the first inning, but left two runners on base.
Monmouth tacked on four additional runs in the top of the third to expand their lead to 8-0. The Hawks recorded five hits in the inning including a two-RBI double to right center field.
In the bottom of the third, Quinnipiac scored their first run of the afternoon. With the bases loaded, Jarrett recorded an RBI walk to force home the Bobcats only score. Monmouth stranded three Bobcats on base with a strikeout to end the frame.
The Bobcats scored a second run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 8-2. Larsen led off the inning with an infield single and advanced into scoring position off an error by the Hawks' second baseman. With two outs, Johnson scored Larsen with an RBI single to right field.
In the fifth inning, Quinnipiac scored a run for the third consecutive inning. Jarrett led off the frame and tallied her third single of the day. After advancing to second on a ground out, the senior came around to score on an RBI double by Troyan. The Bobcats continued to threaten with one out and runners on first and third, but Monmouth struck out the following batter and picked off the runner on third.
Both sides were held scoreless in the final two innings.
Up next, the Bobcats will take a quick break from MAAC play when they host the Yale Bulldogs for Chris's Game on Wednesday, April 13. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 3 p.m. from the QU Softball Field.
