HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to the Maine Black Bears on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats fell in the first game, 9-2 before the Black Bears took the second contest, 3-2.
With the result, QU falls to 9-14 on the season and 1-2 at the QU Softball Field while Maine improves to 10-11.
Sydney Robey (Glenmoore, Pennsylvania) tallied three hits in the doubleheader including an RBI double in the first game.
In just five at bats, Keilani Finley (Alameda, California) also had three hits and a double on the day.
GAME 1
In the first game, Quinnipiac recorded eight hits but scored just two runs as five defensive miscues cost them in the field. Three Bobcats registered multi-hit games against the Black Bears including Casey Herzog (Wappingers Falls, New York), Robey and Finley.
Herzog was perfect from the plate, going 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI double. Robey finished the first game with a 2-for-4 performance, while also adding an RBI double. Finley went 2-for-3 with two singles while senior Katie Strong (South Windsor, Connecticut) was 1-for-1 with a pinch hit double.
Robey took the loss in the circle for Quinnipiac, but gave up just one earned run over four innings pitched. The senior did not get much help from her infield as the Bobcats made five errors in the first game. Robby's record fell to 4-7 on the year with the result.
Maine quickly took the lead in the top of the first inning with two runs off two hits and an error. With two outs, back-to-back singles put runners on first and second for the Black Bears. The following batter scored both runners off a miscue by the QU right fielder.
In the second, Quinnipiac cut the Maine advantage to 2-1 with a run off one hit and two errors. With one out, Finley reached base off an infield hit. Emily Czaja (Palmer, Massachusetts) then grounded into a fielder's choice as Finley was thrown out at second. After a hit batter put runners on first and second, Herzog stepped up with an RBI double to left center field.
The Black Bears took a 3-1 lead in third off an RBI single, but QU limited the damage when Finley made a perfect throw from center field to get the runner out at home plate.
The Bobcats answered in the bottom of the inning with their second run of the game. With a runner on second, Robey smashed an RBI double to left center field.
Maine kept Quinnipiac off the board the rest of the way while scoring six more runs in the last four innings to make the final score, 9-2.
GAME 2
In the second game, the Bobcats recorded just four hits against the Black Bears' defense, but nearly made a comeback in their final at bats.
Freshman Autumn Martin (Riverside, California) tallied her first career hit in a QU uniform with an infield single in the fifth inning. Erin Larsen (Orlando, Florida) went 1-for-1 with an RBI double in the second game.
Herzog got the start for the Bobcats, falling to 5-7 on the year. The sophomore gave up three runs and six hits over seven innings while striking out nine batters.
Maine tallied one run in each of the first three innings including a solo homerun in the second.
Trailing by three, the Bobcats scored their only run off Larsen's two out double to right field in the sixth inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Molly Jarrett (Northport, New York) led off the frame with a walk and advanced to second on a balk by the pitcher. Maria Ascher (Little Canada, Minnesota) then advanced the runner to third when she reached base on a strikeout. With two runners on base, Maine got themselves out of the inning unscathed with three consecutive outs.
Up next, the Bobcats will continue play in Hamden, welcoming the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights to the QU Softball Field on Tuesday, Mar. 29. Quinnipiac will host the Knights in a doubleheader with the first game slated for 2 p.m.
