HAMDEN, Conn. - Ryan McNamara scored four goals as the Marquette men's lacrosse team came away with an 11-5 win over Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon at QU Lacrosse Turf Complex.
With the win, Marquette moves its record to 5-1 on the season, with the only loss coming to Ohio State. Quinnipiac sees its three-game win streak snapped as it falls to 3-2 on the year.
Quinnipiac struck first in the opening minutes, as sophomore attack Brian Feldman (Canandaigua, N.Y.) ripped a shot in from the left side 4:39 into the game off a pass from sophomore attack Anthony Carchietta (Syosset, N.Y.) to put the Bobcats ahead 1-0. However, Marquette did not allow another goal until the last second of the first half as it built a 6-1 lead. Six different players scored during the run, beginning with an unassisted goal from Robbie Pisano at the 6:38 mark of the first quarter and ending with a Connor Gately score with 6:13 left in the second quarter to make the score 6-1.
The Bobcats looked to steal some momentum going into halftime, though, as they scored with just a half-second left on the clock to pull within 6-2. Sophomore attack James Byrns (Massapequa, N.Y.) had the ball on the left side and crossed it in front to junior attack Drew D'Antonio (Norwalk, Conn. - pictured), who scored his first goal with the Bobcats (after transferring from Bryant this year) to beat the clock with just 0.5 left.
Quinnipiac trailed by four at the half in its last game, and rallied to win 11-10 in overtime over Hartford on Saturday. However, the Bobcats weren't able to carry the momentum over from the buzzer-beater and repeat the feat, as Marquette scored the first four goals of the second half, including two from McNamara, to take a commanding 10-2 lead. Quinnipiac did beat the clock a second time, as senior midfielder Nate Nibbelink (Hampstead, Md.) scored off a free from senior attack Ryan Keenan (Oshawa, Ontario) in transition with just 7.1 seconds left in the third to close within 10-3.
McNamara started out the fourth quarter with his fourth goal for Marquette, and Quinnipiac responded with two goals less than a minute apart. Freshman midfielder Foster Cuomo (Oakville, Ontario) scored an unassisted goal with 11:54 left to pull the Bobcats within 11-4, and sophomore midfielder Alex Disalvo (Smithtown, N.Y.) added his first of the year off a Keenan feed with 11:16 to go to make the score 11-5. Quinnipiac kept firing away throughout the fourth quarter, taking 15 of its 26 total shots in the final stanza, but were unable to come closer as neither team found the net in the final 11 minutes.
Gately finished with two goals and two assists for Marquette, while Blaine Fleming added two goals. The Golden Eagles held a 35-26 edge in shots for the game and won 14 of the 19 faceoffs. Sophomore Riley Palmer (Oshawa, Ontario) led the Quinnipiac defense with three caused turnovers and three ground balls, while junior goalie Jack Brust (Baltimore, Md.) finished with nine saves.
Quinnipiac plays its final non-conference game on Tuesday night when it travels to Fairfield for a 7 p.m. contest before returning home to face Siena in its MAAC opener on Saturday at 12 p.m.
