?LAST GAME (MARQUETTE 11, QUINNIPIAC 5)
Marquette used a 6-0 run in the first half to take control as the Golden Eagles went on to capture an 11-5 win over Quinnipiac on Saturday at QU Lacrosse Turf Complex. After sophomore attack Brian Feldman started off the game with a goal for the Bobcats less than five minutes in, six different players scored for the Golden Eagles to put them ahead 6-1 midway through the second quarter. Quinnipiac broke the drought when it beat the clock to score with 0.5 seconds left, when sophomore attack James Byrns found junior attack Drew D'Antonio alone in front to cut the lead to 6-2 at the break, but Marquette prevented the Bobcats from carrying any momentum over by scoring the first four goals of the second half to pull ahead 10-2. Senior midfielder Nate Nibbelink scored a transition goal with 7.1 seconds left in the third quarter, and freshman Foster Cuomo and sophomore Alex Disalvo added early goals in the fourth quarter, but the Golden Eagles packed in the defense and neither team was able to score in the final 11 minutes as the game ended 11-5. Jack Brust had nine saves for the Bobcats in the loss, while sophomore defenseman Riley Palmer led the defense with three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
FAIRFIELD SERIES
Quinnipiac and Fairfield are renewing their local rivalry after a one-year hiatus with the Stags holding a 5-1 all-time lead, including four straight wins. Two years ago, Fairfield was ranked No. 15 in the nation when the two teams met in Hamden, and the Stags came away with a 15-10 win. Current seniors Ryan Keenan (pictured) and Connor Meth each had two goals in that game for the Bobcats. In 2013, the Stags came away with a narrow 11-10 win in the last meeting between the schools at Fairfield's Rafferty Stadium. Quinnipiac's win in the series was also by an 11-10 score, in the 2011 season finale, which the Bobcats won in overtime
IN STATE RIVALRIES
Quinnipiac is facing its second Connecticut rival this year, and is hoping to have a similar storyline to the first one of ending a head-to-head winning streak for its opponent. On Match 12, the Bobcats prevailed 11-10 at Hartford in overtime to snap a six-game winning streak in the series for the Hawks, while Fairfield comes in to Tuesday night with four straight wins against Quinnipiac. Senior midfielder Connor Meth bounced in the game-winning shot with 2:23 left in overtime as Quinnipiac rallied from a 7-3 halftime deficit to take the win over Hartford. The Bobcats never led until freshman midfielder Foster Cuomo give Quinnipiac a 10-9 advantage with 2:47 left. Seven seconds later, Hartford tied it up off the faceoff and neither team could score the rest of the way in regulation. Junior goalkeeper Jack Brust had 14 saves, eight in the second half, including several key ones in the fourth quarter.
QUICK START FOR BOBCATS
Quinnipiac comes into the weekend with a 3-2 record after having a three-game winning streak snapped by Marquette on Saturday. A win over Fairfield would move Quinnipiac to 4-2 for the first time since the 2010 team won four of its first six. Overlapping the last two seasons, Quinnipiac is 8-3 in its last 11 games, including a 5-1 finish to last season and a 3-2 start this year.
FROST, BRUST EARN MAAC HONORS
Freshman attack Matt Frost was named the MAAC Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week on Feb. 29 after scoring his first three collegiate goals in Quinnipiac's 12-6 road win over Bellarmine. A week later, junior goalie Jack Brust was named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week after tallying 12 saves, eight of which came in the second half, in a 9-7 win over NJIT.
KEENAN ON CAREER CHARTS
Senior attack Ryan Keenan has a strong chance to finish among the all-time leaders in Quinnipiac history in goals and points. His 67 career goals, including six so far this season, already rank him 12th in Bobcat annals, five shy of moving into the top 10. If he matches the 27 goals he scored last year, he will move all the way up to fourth place by season's end. Keenan also has 91 career points (11 so far this season), moving him into a four-way tie for 14th, and a 30-point season this spring would move him up to eighth (he had 38 points last year).
KEENAN POINT STREAK AT 19
Senior attack Ryan Keenan has had at least one point in each of the last 19 games for the Bobcats, dating back to an opening-day defeat to Brown last season. Marquette threatened to end his streak on Saturday, but he picked up an assist in the closing seconds of the third quarter and added another in the fourth. Former teammate Michael Sagl ended his career last season with a streak of 47 games in a row with at least one point.
A HAT TRICK OF HAT TRICKS FOR FELDMAN
Sophomore attack Brian Feldman had hat tricks in three straight games (Bellarmine, NJIT, Hartford), and has scored at least once in every game to lead the team with 11 goals so far this year. He almost had hat tricks in the first four games this season, but he had one goal and hit the pipe twice in an opening day loss to No. 5 Brown. He now has 40 career goals, eight career hat tricks, and has scored at least one goal in 16 of the last 17 games dating back to last season (and 17 of 20 in his career). He is ahead of pace to score over 100 goals in his career, something only three Bobcats have accomplished.
BOBCAT STAT LEADERS
There is a tight four-way race for the points lead for the Bobcats so far this season, with sophomore attack Brian Feldman (11 goals) leading the way in goals, while being tied for the team points lead by senior attack Ryan Keenan (six goals, five assists). The two are followed closely by senior midfielder Connor Meth (6-3-9), while freshman midfielder Foster Cuomo (5-3-8) is in the hunt as well. Sophomore midfielder Ryan Vitelli leads in faceoffs won (46 of 94) and ground balls with 20, while junior goalkeeper Jack Brust is second in ground balls (14) and has a 10.77 goals against average and a .495 save percentage, and senior defenseman Ryan Lawler leads the team in caused turnovers with 10.
FAMILY TIES
Quinnipiac's top two goal scorers in the last two seasons are sophomore attack Brian Feldman (40) and senior attack Ryan Keenan (33). Coincidentally, they aren't the first members of their families to play college lacrosse together. Keenan's father, Derek, and Feldman's father, Daniel, played for one season together on the Ithaca lacrosse team in 1987, when Derek Keenan was a senior and Daniel Feldman was a freshman. It was a connection both players were unaware of until they were teammates at Quinnipiac.
CUOMO WITH INSTANT IMPACT
After being held without a point in his college debut against current No. 5 Brown, freshman midfielder Foster Cuomo has proven to be a dangerous threat from the midfield position, with at least one point in each of his last four games. He picked up a goal and three assists in a win at Bellarmine on Feb. 27, and had a pair of key second-half goals in an 11-10 comeback win over Hartford on March 12. He now ranks fourth on the team in scoring with five goals and three assists for eight points.
LAWSON PROVIDES A LIFT
Sophomore midfielder Ryan Lawson saw his first action of the 2016 season on March 12 against Hartford and came up big, providing two second half goals to help the Bobcats rally from a 7-3 halftime deficit to win in overtime. Lawson's second goal tied the score at 9-9 late in the fourth quarter after the Hawks had broken an 8-8 tie. Lawson had two goals as a freshman last season, one of which came against a Stony Brook team that finished the year ranked in the top 20.
SOME FIRSTS AGAINST MARQUETTE
Despite the 11-5 loss to Marquette on Saturday, two members of the Bobcats broke into the scoring time for the first time in their Bobcat careers. Junior attack Drew D'Antonio, who transferred this season from Bryant, scored his first goal in a Quinnipiac uniform with 0.5 seconds left in the second quarter. Sophomore midfielder Alex Disalvo then added his first Bobcat goal in the fourth quarter, while senior midfielder Nate Nibbelink added his first goal of the season (and 13th of his career).
SCOUTING THE STAGS
Fairfield comes in to Tuesday night's game with a 3-5 record after starting out 0-3 with losses to Richmond, Bucknell and Rutgers. Since the slow start, they have picked up wins over UMass Lowell, Georgetown, and Colgate, interspersed with two losses to nationally ranked teams (Yale and Stony Brook). Colin Burke (21 goals) and TJ Neubauer (15 goals) give the Stags a strong 1-2 scoring punch, while Charlie Schnider (seven goals, 15 assists) has thrived in the feeder role. Tyler Behring has seen most of the action in goal and has a 9.91 goals against average and a .566 save percentage. Will Fox is the primary faceoff specialist and has won just over 50 percent (71 of 135) on the year.
BOBCATS PICKED SECOND IN MAAC COACHES POLL
The Quinnipiac men's lacrosse team was picked to finish second in the MAAC Preseason Coaches Poll, announced on December 9, 2015. Marist College, last year's MAAC Champions, claimed the top spot in the poll, while Monmouth was picked third. Marist and Quinnipiac met in the conference championship game a year ago, which the Red Foxes won on their home field 16-14.
INSIDE LACROSSE RECOGNITION
Three seniors on the Quinnipiac men's lacrosse team – attack Ryan Keenan, midfielder Connor Meth and defenseman Chris Kendall - were named to the Preseason All-MAAC team by Inside Lacrosse Magazine in December. Keenan and Meth were also named to the Preseason All-MAAC team, which was voted on by the conference coaches.
BOBCATS NAME 2016 CAPTAINS
Five members of the Bobcats will share captain duties this spring, including four seniors and a redshirt junior. Attack Ryan Keenan, midfielder Connor Meth, defenseman Chris Kendall, face-off specialist Connor Devane, and goalkeeper Jack Brust will give Quinnipiac veteran leadership at every position on the field.
YOUNG SQUAD IN 2016
The leadership of the Bobcats captains (see above) will be key as Quinnipiac has a lot of young faces on the team this season. A total of 31 of the 43 players on the roster are freshmen (15) and sophomores.(16), while two junior transfers in their first seasons at Quinnipiac, adding to the influx of new talent. The youth has Quinnipiac poised to be a consistent contender in the MAAC for the next few seasons.
TOUGH TOP TO BOTTOM
Quinnipiac finished second in the MAAC last season, but just about every conference game it played came down to the wire. The Bobcats played at least one game against each of the other six conference teams that was decided by three goals or less, picking up one-goal wins over Detroit (13-12) and Monmouth (9-8) and two-goal wins over Manhattan (8-6) and Canisius (9-7). The Bobcats also fell 9-6 to Siena and dropped a 16-14 decision to Marist in the MAAC title game.
HOME, SWEET HOME
Quinnipiac's performance on its home turf will be important for the team's prospects in the MAAC this year. The Bobcats play road games against the other three teams that qualified for the MAAC Tournament last year (Marist, Monmouth, Detroit). A year ago, Quinnipiac earned two big one-goal wins on its home field, edging Detroit and Monmouth to earn the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament.
ROAD, SWEET ROAD
It is early in the season, but so far Quinnipiac has an unblemished road record, picking up wins at Bellarmine (12-6) and Hartford (11-10, OT). Bellarmine had played a closer game on the road at No. 1 Notre Dame earlier in the week (11-6), while Hartford had won the previous six meetings in the series with Quinnipiac, including an overtime win in Hamden last season.
NEXT UP
The Bobcats will return home to face Siena on Saturday, March 26 at 12 p.m. in its MAAC opener as the Bobcats hit the midway point of its regular schedule. The final six games will all be against conference opponents.
