FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield men's lacrosse team closed out the first half on a 5-0 run to take a 7-2 lead and went on to take a 13-7 win over Quinnipiac on Tuesday night at Rafferty Stadium.
With the win, Fairfield improves to 4-5 on the year and stretches its winning streak to five games in the series with the Bobcats. Quinnipiac falls to 3-3 overall on the year, while dropping its first road game of the season after winning its first two away from Hamden (at Bellarmine, at Hartford).
T.J. Neubauer had five goals to lead the way for Fairfield, while Colin Burke chipped in with four. Freshman midfielder Foster Cuomo (Oakville, Ontario) and sophomore midfielder Anthony Carchietta (Syosset, N.Y. – pictured) each had two goals and an assist for the Bobcats, while senior attack Ryan Keenan (Oshawa, Ontario) had a goal and an assist in the fourth quarter to stretch his streak to 20 games with at least one point.
After trailing 2-1 after the first quarter, junior attack Drew D'Antonio (Norwalk, Conn.) tied the score early in the second when he snuck in from behind the cage and took a feed from Cuomo to make it 2-2. However, Neubauer scored three times in the half-ending 5-0 run to give his team a 7-2 lead at the break, including two goals in the final minute at 0:59 and 0:17 to give the Stags control of the game.
The Bobcats never led, as the Stags scored the first two when Colin Burke and Neubauer each found the net 15 seconds apart to make it 2-0 at the 11:12 mark. Carchietta got the Bobcats on the board when he buried a shot from long distance at the 6:56 mark of the first quarter to close the lead to 2-1.
Fairfield kept the momentum going after halftime and built the lead to 11-3 after the third quarter, with Carchietta accounting for the lone Quinnipiac goal in the third stanza off a feed from D'Antonio. Neubauer opened up the fourth quarter with his fifth goal of the game to stretch the lead to 12-3, before two straight goals from Cuomo cut it to 12-5. Senior midfielder Connor Meth (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and Keenan added goals for the Bobcats late in the game.
Tyler Behring had a solid day in goal for Fairfield, tallying eight saves and allowing just six goals. Junior goalkeeper Jack Brust (Baltimore, Md.) had 11 saves for Quinnipiac in the loss, while senior midfielder Nate Nibbelink (Hampstead, Md.) and freshman long stick Bryce Nalls (Fairfax Station, Va.) tied for team-high honors with four ground balls apiece.
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Saturday when it returns home to meet Siena at 12 p.m. in the MAAC opener for the Bobcats at QU Lacrosse Complex.
