
QU Softball Holds Off UMass Lowell in Last Inning to Capture 2-1 Victory

Sydney Robey Went 2-for-3 With a Double and Game-Tying Run
CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Quinnipiac softball team came back from an early one-run deficit and held off UMass Lowell in the last inning to capture a 2-1 victory on Wednesday afternoon. With the result, the Bobcats improved to 6-9 while the River Hawks dropped to 4-13.
Senior Sydney Robey (Glenmoore, Pennsylvania) led the offense with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate. Robey also smashed an RBI double and scored the winning run. Sophomore Maria Ascher (Little Canada, Minnesota) went 1-for-2 in the box with a double.
The River Hawks took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off two walks and a base hit. UMass Lowell led off the game with a walk and the runner advanced into scoring position after the next batter laid down a sacrifice bunt. The runner then reached third on a wild pitch and came around to score on an infield single to third base.
With one out in the bottom of the frame, freshman Sydney Dennis (Kingwood, Texas) recorded her first career hit in a Bobcat uniform with a single up the middle. Dennis then advanced to second on a ground ball out, but was left stranded in the inning.
Starting pitcher Casey Herzog (Wappingers Falls, New York) held the River Hawks scoreless through the final six innings while Quinnipiac took the lead in the fourth. Herzog pitched the complete game allowing just one run and five hits while striking out three batters over seven innings. The sophomore improved to 3-5 on the season with the victory.
Quinnipiac took a 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the fourth off three hits and an error. Senior Dani Edmands (Northborough, Massachusetts) led off the inning and reached second base on an error by the River Hawks' infield.
Edmands then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Erin Larsen (Orlando, Florida). Robey stepped up to the plate and drove in the game-tying run with a double down the left field line. With two outs, junior Keilani Finley (Alameda, California) gave the Bobcats the lead with an RBI single up the middle.
Down by just one run in their final at bats, the River Hawks threatened to send the game into extra innings. UMass Lowell led off the top of the seventh with a double to center field. Herzog then struck out the next batter for the first out of the inning. The third batter of the frame grounded out to third base, but the runner advanced to third. With two outs and the tying runner on third, Herzog got the batter to fly out to left field for the final out.
The Bobcats will continue their trip in Florida with the USF Spring Break Tournament on Friday, Mar. 18. Quinnipiac will play five more games in Clearwater over the weekend starting with a doubleheader on Friday. The Bobcats will take on Lehigh at 2:15 p.m. followed by a matchup with Northwestern at 4:30 p.m.
