Lee Earned Spot in Finals of the 60m Hurdles and 200m Dash on Saturday
BOSTON, Massachusetts – Jessica Lee (Montgomery, New Jersey) came bursting out of the gates in day one of the New England Championships, qualifying for the finals of the 60m hurdles and 200m dash on Friday afternoon.
The sophomore standout for the Quinnipiac women's indoor track and field team accomplished the rare feat as few sprinters concentrated in the 60m and 200m distances are able to excel in the hurdle events and vice versa. Lee started her impressive day with a time of 8.81 seconds in the preliminary round of her signature 60m hurdles event. One year after placing fifth in the same event at the 2015 New England Championships, Lee stands with the third-fastest preliminary time entering the finals on Saturday. She then followed that up with a personal-best time of 24.89 seconds in the 200m preliminaries as she owns the third-fastest time heading into the finals of the sprint event as well. The new personal-best for Lee also stands as the second-fastest 200m in program history.
Advancing to the semifinal round on Saturday in the 60m dash was Alea Simons (Piscataway, New Jersey) as the senior posted an impressive time of 7.87 seconds that made her the 11th-fastest sprinter in the preliminaries. She joins 15 other runners for the semifinals on Saturday with the top eight fastest advancing to the finals later in the day tomorrow. The performance is already much improved on her previous personal-best of 22nd place at the New England Championships in any of her three appearances prior to Friday.
Sophomore Leah Pfrommer (Killingworth, Connecticut) came ever so close to placing for the Bobcats in the high jump as she finished with 5.45m to take ninth place, falling one spot short of earning points for the Bobcats in the team standings. The performance is still an improvement on her 5.41m showing in last season's New England Championships.
Another very impressive result that wasn't awarded any points was senior Kristen Ulrich (Clark, New Jersey) in the 400m as she ran the fastest time of her career (56.58 seconds) as well as the third-fastest in program history only to be up against some stiff competition as the new personal-best was good enough for 11th out of a field of 36 talented sprinters. The performance was still a marked improvement in the same event from last year's New England Championships (13th, 57.50).
The other top performances from the day included a new personal-best for junior Alyson Caron (Andover, New Jersey) as she clocked in at 2:15.38 in the 800m to place 14th. Cori Reid (Old Saybrook, Connecticut) was right behind Caron with a time of 2:16.64 as she placed 18th in the same event.
Quinnipiac will be back in action with another full slate on Saturday as the Bobcats gear up for day two of the New England Championships at the Boston University Track Center.
