Kiera Kelly (8 Ground Balls) Falls Just One Ground Ball Shy of Matching Program Record
NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – It was a clear tale of two halves on Wednesday as Yale outscored the Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team 8-2 in the first half before eventually dispatching the Bobcats, 11-4, from Reese Stadium in New Haven. The loss for Quinnipiac drops the Bobcats to 0-2 while the Bulldogs improved to 1-1 on the season.
Coming off a disappointing 21-0 loss in the 2016 season opener, Quinnipiac certainly found their defensive identity in the second half as Yale scored just three of their 11 goals in the final 30 minutes of play. The 11-goal total for the Bulldogs also easily stands as the fewest allowed by Quinnipiac in the series history as the previous fewest came in 2014 when Yale defeated the Bobcats, 15-8.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kyle Larkin (Holbrook, New York) played the best game of her young career as she picked up a career-high 11 saves on 22 shots-on-goal (.500 save percentage) including eight in the second half alone. The double digit save game is the second of her young career with just seven starts to her name. Larkin also added another career-high six ground balls in the defeat.
Another defensive standout on the day was sophomore Kiera Kelly (West Islip, New York) who filled the stat sheet with career highs in ground balls (eight) and caused turnovers (four). After becoming the first freshman in program history to lead Quinnipiac in ground balls and caused turnovers last season, Kelly came one ground ball shy of matching the single-game program record (nine) which was compiled by Christy Smallman against Vermont on March 4, 2005.
Goal scorers on the day for the Bobcats included a pair of career-firsts as freshman Aubrey Conti (Latham, New York) and Allison Kuhn (Kingsville, Maryland) picked up their first career goals while Kathleen DeVito (Glastonbury, Connecticut) netted two goals herself to give the senior 15 career multi-goal games. Freshman Ellie Swenson (Ipswich, Massachusetts) tallied an assist on the Conti goal for her first collegiate point.
The pace of play was entirely one-sided in the early going as the Bulldogs struck for the first six goals of the game leaving the score at 6-0 with 11:41 remaining in the first half. Yale's top scorer Tess McEvoy was heavily involved in the early going as she registered three straight goals at one point but as soon as the move was made by the Bobcats to face-guard her with Leah Walter (Londonderry, New Hampshire), McEvoy didn't net a goal and was held to one assist for the remaining 45+ minutes of play.
Quinnipiac lit up the scoreboard for the first time in 2016 at the 8:13 mark of the first half as Swenson lofted a pass over the heads of three oncoming Yale defenders near midfield to a wide open Conti in the Bulldogs' defensive zone. Conti took a few steps to set up her shot which went low on the keeper and in for the first Bobcat goal of 2016.
DeVito followed with a second straight Bobcat goal as she made a nice spin move at the top of the crease before she buried her first goal of the season to make it 6-2 with 6:37 left in the first half.
Yale answered with a big two-goal run that made it 8-2 at the half because Quinnipiac continued to pressure on offense getting a free position goal from Kuhn that made it pushed it back to a five-goal deficit with nearly 27 minutes left to play.
The lead, however, was too much to overcome as possession swung back into Yale's side as the shots heavily favored the Bulldogs (18-8) in the second half. If not for the herculean effort from Larkin in net (eight saves on 11 shots-on-goal in the second half), the 11-4 final margin could have been much worse.
Other notable stats include a career-high three ground balls for senior Sara McCullough (Brewster, Massachusetts) while Conti added two caused turnovers with her one goal on the day.
Quinnipiac will have a quick turnaround for their next game as the Bobcats head to Binghamton on Saturday, Feb. 27 for a 1 PM start.
