Roberts (1 Mile), Campbell (1000m) and Pisciotta (Triple Jump) Each Break School Records on the Day
BOSTON, Massachusetts – It appears as if the Quinnipiac women's indoor track and field team is starting to peak at just the right time as three more program records were broken on Friday at the Valentine Invitational on the campus of Boston University. With the MAAC Championships just nine days away, the Bobcats enter the conference title meet coming off their two most successful meets of the season.
"I think that a lot of our athletes are feeling confident after their performances in the last couple meets," said Quinnipiac head coach Carolyn Martin. "They're going into the MAAC Championships believing they can excel and we're all gearing up for what should be a very exciting day of competition next Sunday."
The three program records to fall on the day included Kaleigh Roberts (Higganum, Connecticut) in the one mile, Tracy Campbell (Wall Township, New Jersey) in the 1000m and Bonnie Pisciotta (Lindenhurst, New York) in the triple jump. This outing, combined with the three individual victories and new program record in the distance medley relay last weekend at Yale, sets up the Bobcats nicely for the MAAC Championships to be held next Sunday at the Armory in NYC.
Roberts got things going for the Bobcats early with her record-setting run in the one mile event. After taking home the individual victory in the 1000m last weekend, Roberts came through with a very impressive 4:50.06 performance to give her 25th place out of 246 runners in the event. Her record-setting time bested a Quinnipiac program record that was set by none other than former All-American Kaitlyn Gwyther over 10 years ago on Feb. 26, 2005 (4:50.68) at the same track in Boston University.
Campbell continues to excel in her senior season as she picked up a new program record in the 1000m with a time of 2:53.79. The new program record time placed Campbell 15th overall in a field that included 88 competitors. Not only did Campbell best Medinah Nabadduka's previous program record (2:53.96), but she also improved on her previous personal best in the 1000m (2:57.06) by more than three full seconds.
The final program record to fall on the day came from Pisciotta who leapt 11.34m in the triple jump to break her own program record of 11.27m set during the 2014-15 outdoor season at Yale. Pisciotta's new program record also placed her 15th overall out of 52 competitors in the same event.
The 400m dash was littered with strong showings from the Bobcats as Shameal Samuels (Hartford, Connecticut) led the way with an 8th place showing (54.59 seconds) while Nia Baker (Brooklyn, New York) took 18th (56.36 seconds) and Kristen Ulrich placed 35th (57.31 seconds) out of 196 total competitors in the sprint event. Even though Samuels didn't defend her 2015 400m Valentine Invitational title, her time of 54.59 seconds still is a season-high as she continues to peak for the championship season. Baker, meanwhile, shined with a new personal best time of 56.36 seconds as she continues to hold the second-fastest 400m time in program history behind Samuels.
Samuels continued her stellar day with another season-high time of 24.55 seconds in the 200m dash to place 15th out of 239 runners in the sprint. Baker also showed well with a time of 25.66 seconds to place 58th while Leah Pfrommer (Killingworth, Connecticut) entered the Top 10 all-time record list at Quinnipiac with a new personal best time of 25.93 seconds in the 200m.
Cori Reid (Old Saybrook, Connecticut) continues to steadily improve as her junior season moves along as she also entered the Top 10 all-time record list at Quinnipiac with her new personal best time of 2:16.56 in the 800m.
Katey Veron (Franklin Square, New York) fared well in the one mile run as she easily scored a new personal-best with a time of 5:11.59 to place her 81st out of a field of 246 in the event. Mackenzie Merkel (Hillsdale, New Jersey) came through with a solid 20th place showing in the shot put with a throw of 11.40m. Emily Wolff's (Highlands Ranch, Colorado) new season-high time of 9:57.49 in the 3000m put her 49th out of 122.
Next up for the Bobcats is the 2016 MAAC Championships as Quinnipiac looks to improve upon their third place showing at last year's conference championship meet.
