BRONX, New York – The Quinnipiac men's cross country team concluded their 2016 season with a 22nd place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional held on Friday at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The finishing place for the Bobcats is a six-spot markup from their 28th place result at the 2015 NCAA Regionals.
Running for the final time in the blue and gold was the dynamic tandem of Brendan Copley (Colchester, Vermont) and Dylan Fearon (Tenafly, New Jersey) as the two finished their careers with a pair of Top 50 finishes on the day.
Copley, one of the most decorated runners in program history, landed in 43rd place overall out of 245 competitors to lead the team. Crossing the line in 31:43.40, Copley ran perhaps one of the best races of his career as his previous career-best at the NCAA Regionals was his 84th place finish back in 2014. He also knocked more than 13 seconds of his previous personal-best time in the event. Copley wraps up his career as a Bobcat as just the second runner in program history to finish as a four-time All-Conference performer.
Fearon's development and improvement year-in and year-out has been a marvel as he will be remembered for a tremendous senior season capped by his 49th place finish on the day. Just one year removed from placing 205th at the 2015 NCAA Regionals, Fearon easily set a new career high in the event (prev. 131st in 2014). He clocked in at 31:49.72 as he kept pace with Copley throughout the 10k event and finished his career with a landmark performance.
Freshman Tommy Consalvo (Brookfield, Connecticut) closed out his rookie campaign with another productive meet as he claimed 119th place in his first NCAA Regional event. As Consalvo crossed the line in 32:52.07, he concludes the 2016 season having shown great consistency in placing third on the team in five straight meets.
Another breakout star on the day was sophomore Ryan Ansel (Danbury, Connecticut) who put together one of the best runs of his career as he placed 176th in his first NCAA Regional event. After not competing in the event last season, Ansel showed very well in placing a season high fourth on the team while crossing the line in 33:46.26.
Rounding out the scoring in his final career event was senior Kyle Liang (Norwich, Connecticut) as he managed to cross the line in 188th place with a time of 34:01.81.
Quinnipiac finishes the 2016 season and will graduate four runners including one of the best in program history in Copley. First-year head coach Josh Glaab does have the benefit of 11 returning letterwinners from this season and will look to build his team into a consistent threat in the MAAC.
