PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The Quinnipiac women's volleyball team fell 3-0 (19-25, 19-25, 19-25) to the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks in the opening game of the Maryland Eastern Shore Invitational Friday night at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.
Katie Urycki (Chesterton, Indiana) led the Bobcats (1-3) in the match with eight kills and a team high nine digs. Elizabeth Kloos (Munster, Indiana) also put up a solid effort for the Bobcats with five kills and a total attack percentage of .556 while leading the team defensively with two solo blocks and two assisted blocks.
The Hawks (5-0) led much of the first set, taking the frame 25-19. Urycki led all players with five of Quinnipiac's 10 kills. The Bobcats recorded a .207 hitting percentage in the set and held UMES to .172 and 11 kills. Quinnipiac scored three consecutive points to tie the set at seven all early in the first frame, but four straight points by the Hawks gave them the lead for good. After the Bobcats cut the lead to two, UMES scored five of the last seven points to take a 1-0 advantage.
Much like the first set, Maryland Eastern Shore took the second 25-19 to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The Bobcats led the Hawks 8-7 in the second set, but gave up five straight points to UMES. Maryland Eastern Shore did not look back and kept at least a three point lead for the rest of the set, including the final three points of the frame.
Not much changed for the Bobcats in the third set, again falling 19-25. Similar to the early going of the first set, three points in a row tied the final frame at eight all. The Hawks again rallied for four consecutive points to take a 12-8 lead. After eventually falling down by five, the Bobcats cut the UMES advantage to 15-17.
The Hawks finished the match by outscoring QU, 8-4. Quinnipiac posted an impressive .300 hitting percentage in the final set, but it was not good enough to hold of UMES and their .440 mark to go along with 14 kills.
The Quinnipiac volleyball team returns to action with a pair of matches on Saturday, Sept. 5 with the first match set for 10 A.M. against North Carolina A&T State University before facing the Delaware State University Hornets at 3 P.M. Both matches will be played at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center as part of the Maryland Eastern Shore Invitational.
