Lauren Belskie Scores Twice As QU Field Hockey Tops Vermont, 4-3

Belskie has now scored in back-to-back games after finding the back of the cage against Hofstra in her last outing. Her two-goal effort against the Catamounts is also a season-best for the Bobcats. Angie King (South Windsor, Connecticut) scored her second goal of the season while also recording her NCAA Division I-leading 11th defensive save of the year. Haley Swartz (Downington, Pennsylvania) scored her second of the year while Savanna Reilly (Hamden, Connecticut) and Lily Shemo (Luzerne, Pennsylvania) had assists for the Bobcats.
King's goal came just under 20 minutes into the game and broke a scoreless tie. Off of a corner, King blasted a shot on goal that was knocked down in front of the cage. She collected her own rebound and lifted it over UVM's Lena Benwood to put Quinnipiac on the board first. King also made a save on a corner before UVM's Anne-Marie Farmer scored her third of the season off a pass from Lauren Tucker.
Coming out of the half, Michelle Federico (Cheshire, Connecticut) talk off down the right flank and centered a pass through the circle across the goal mouth. Reilly was waiting in front for the tip, but the ball was popped up into the air, instead of on-goal, where Swartz was waiting to bat it past Benwood and give Quinnipiac a 2-1 lead.
Vermont struck back and tied the score at 2-2 on Tess O'Brien's first goal of the year just six minutes later. Rachael Picchi picked up a loose ball off the pads of Quinnipiac keeper Megan Conaboy and handed it to O'Brien who pushed it under the Bobcats' goalkeeper to even the score.
The Bobcats answered with two unanswered goals, both from Belskie off of corners. Belskie took a pass from Shemo and slipped it past Benwood to give Quinnipiac a 3-2 lead before she picked up a rebound off a shot in front of the Vermont cage and gave Quinnipiac a two-goal with less than 10 minutes to play.
Vermont made it interesting one-minute-and-thirty-three seconds later when Taylor Gaines was awarded a penalty stroke, which she flipped past Conaboy to cut Quinnipiac's lead in half, 4-3. Vermont threatened in the closing minutes but a shot by Lauren Tucker went wide before Molly Higgins had a shot stopped by Belskie with three minutes to play. Higgins - UVM's leading scorer - had one last bid, but her shot from the left of Conaboy was tipped and sailed wide of the cage.
Quinnipiac returns to action when it travels to University Park, Pennsylvania to take on Penn State on Friday, Oct. 2. The Bobcats return home for their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener on Oct. 9 when they host Bryant at 3:30 p.m. at the QU Field Hockey Turf Complex in Hamden, Connecticut.
