Hamden, Conn. - The Saint Peter's men's soccer team scored twice in the second half to take a 2-0 win over Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon, handing the Bobcats their first conference loss since 2013.
With the win, Saint Peter's improves to 3-3-1 overall and 1-0 in the MAAC, while Quinnipiac falls to 0-6-2 and 0-1 in conference play. The three-time defending conference champion Bobcats had come into the contest with a 17-game unbeaten streak against MAAC opponents (10-0-7), dating back to a loss to Momnouth in 2013.
"This was obviously not the start we envisioned," said Quinnipiac Head Coach Eric Da Costa. "Starting league play, you are looking to get off on the right foot. But at the end of the day, we are one game into conference play. We've put ourselves in a position where we have to make up three points, but there are still 27 more points to be had."
Quinnipiac controlled play for most of the first half, outshooting Saint Peter's 5-2 and tallying six corner kicks to none for the Peacocks. Bobcats goalkeeper Triston Henry (Scarborough, Ont.) was almost totally untested until the 44th minute, when he corralled a hard shot from 18 yards to keep the game scoreless going into halftime.
The Peacocks finally broke the deadlock in transition in the 68th minute as Luke Fairlamb teed off from 25 yards and hit a hard knuckler that dipped towards the lower-right corner. Henry dove at full extension and got his fingertips on it, but wasn't able to keep it from crossing over the line to make the score 1-0 at the 67:04 mark.
Quinnipiac almost got the equalizer just two minutes later when freshman forward Rashawn Dally (Bloomfield, Conn. - pictured) leaked in behind the Saint Peter's defense on the left side. Peacocks goalie Jamie Cleland came off his line and made a diving save on Dally's initial attempt, and freshman midfielder Colton Grob (Suffield, Conn.) nearly was first to the rebound with the net open, but the Saint Peter's defense was able to clear the ball out of danger.
The momentum swung further away from the Bobcats when Louis Mobbs struck on a counter in the 75th minute to stretch the Saint Peter's lead to 2-0. Jack Fisher played a long ball up the right side, and Mobbs was able to get to hold off a Quinnipiac defender and slip a shot past an onrushing Henry and into the net with 15:13 left to play.
Quinnipiac finished the game with a 15-9 edge in shots and a big 10-1 edge in corner kicks. Cleland had five saves in goal for Saint Peter's to get the shutout, while Henry had three for the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac returns to action next weekend when it continues MAAC play with a road game at Niagara, beginning at 1 p.m. before returning home to face Marist on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 3 p.m.
