LAWRENCEVILLE, New Jersey – The Quinnipiac men's cross country team wrapped up a solid showing at the Rider Invitational on Saturday with a 4th place finish out of 10 teams. Dylan Fearon (Tenafly, New Jersey) and Matt Mensher (Tolland, Connecticut) both tallied Top 10 results as Quinnipiac tallied 111 points on the day. Monmouth picked up the team victory with 42 points overall.
"The men ran well especially considering we didn't have all our guys competing today," said Quinnipiac head coach Carolyn Martin. "They're working really hard so they used this meet to get a chance to preview the course and what we're going to be expecting for the end of the season. The guys packed up well and I couldn't have asked for a better effort on the day."
A key meet in the 2015 season for the Bobcats, this was the first chance for the Quinnipiac runners to see and race at the site of the MAAC Championships. Just a little over a month away, the Bobcats will look to make some improvements as the same course at Rosedale Park will be used to decide the conference champion on Oct. 31.
Now in his third season, Fearon continues to excel this season as he finished in 7th place overall which was also good enough for the fastest Bobcat for the first time in his career. Fearon's 7th place finish not only represented a new career high but it also marked the first Top 10 in the career for the junior runner. Coming into the season with a career-best result of 16th place, Fearon has now finished with a new career high in each of the first two meets of the season. Fearon's breakthrough performance had him clocking in at 24:59.5.
Mensher also continues to excel this season as he finished as the second-fastest Bobcat, placing right behind Fearon in 8th place overall out of 137 competitors. After taking 6th place at the season opening Stony Brook Invitational on Sept. 5, Mensher came through with his second straight and fourth career Top 10 finish with a time of 25:01.6.
Another breakout junior Kyle Liang (Norwich, Connecticut) continued the strong day for the Bobcats as he placed 26th overall and third-fastest on the team. Liang placed as at least the third-fastest Bobcat for just the third time in 14 career appearances. His time of 25:22.7 led Liang to one of his strongest career results.
The string of Bobcats continued with sophomore Drew Reda (Holmdel, New Jersey) as the underclassman placed 35th overall. Reda continued his strong start to the year as he crossed the finish line in 25:28.7. Through eight career appearances, Reda has finished no worse than fourth on the team in seven of those eight meets.
Rounding out the field for Quinnipiac was redshirt senior Thomas Dextradeur (Branford, Connecticut) and sophomores Connor McAlary (Shoreham, New York) and Tyler Mannion (Brookfield, Connecticut). Dextradeur placed 44th with a time of 25:44.1 while McAlary crossed the line in 54th place with a time of 26:05.8. Mannion rounded out the bunch with a time of 26:34.9 which was good enough for 72nd place.
Quinnipiac men's cross country will next compete at the crowded field in the Paul Short Invitational on the campus of Lehigh University on Friday, Oct. 2.
