BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania – The Quinnipiac men's cross country team successfully navigated their way through their most competitive meet of the 2015 season as the Bobcats placed 12th out of 39 teams at the 42nd annual Paul Short Invitational on Friday from the campus of Lehigh University.
"On the men's side it was a very competitive meet," said Quinnipiac head coach Carolyn Martin. "It was the biggest race of the day and it was extremely competitive. Our overall time was better than last year and we did great but we had a lot of great teams going against us. We've been increasing their workload in practice over the last week and we'll continue to see them improve as the season goes along."
Dylan Fearon (Tenafly, New Jersey) continued his breakout season, placing 35th overall out of 354 total competitors on Friday. Just two years removed from placing 119th in the same event, Fearon has improved on his end result at the Paul Short Invitational in each of his three appearances in the event. Friday's career-high came in a time of 25:24 while he also placed first on the team now in consecutive weeks after coming into the season with a career-best of third on the team.
Matt Mensher (Tolland, Connecticut) improved 23 seconds from his time at the 2014 Paul Short Invitational as he crossed the line in 25:33 to place 47th overall. Mensher's leadership on this year's team has been vital as the tandem of him and Fearon have finished as the top two Bobcats in all three appearances to start the 2015 season.
Connor McAlary (Shoreham, New York) saw the biggest year-to-year improvement of any Bobcat on the day as his 102nd place result on Friday was a team-high 114-spot improvement on his previous best finish at the Paul Short Invitational. McAlary led the Bobcats' second pack of runners who all placed within eight spots of one another as he crossed the line in 25:55 to improve significantly from his time in 2014 (27:28).
McAlary's pack also included Drew Reda (Holmdel, New Jersey) and Tyler Mannion (Brookfield, Connecticut) who finished in 106th and 110th, respectively. Reda clocked in at 25:58 while Mannion showed well in his first appearance at the Paul Short Invitational with a time of 26:00.
Rounding out the Quinnipiac contingent on the day was Kyle Liang (Norwich, Connecticut) and Ryan Ansel (Danbury, Connecticut). Liang clocked in with a time of 26:15 to place a career-best 140th at a Paul Short Invitational event. Ansel, meanwhile, finished with a time of 26:26 to take 162nd place in his first career appearance at the event.
Quinnipiac continues with another crowded field next week as the Bobcats will take part in the 2015 New England Championships on Saturday, Oct. 10 from Franklin Park at 12:30 PM.
