CLEARWATER, Florida – On the second day of the Michele Smith Spring Break Classic at USF, the Quinnipiac University softball team fell to Purdue, 2-1 in the early game before going down to the Northern Illinois Huskies, 7-0. The two losses drop the Bobcats to 2-14 on the year while the Boilermakers improve to 16-8 and the Huskies go to 10-12.
In the first game, the Bobcats fell to the Boilermakers after taking a one run lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Starting pitcher Hannah Lindsley (Narraganset, Rhode Island) had an all-around performance, allowing two runs – one earned – and four hits over 5.1 innings pitched. The senior added three strikeouts and a walk against 23 batters faced. At the plate, Lindsley was 2-for-2 with a homerun and the Bobcats' only RBI.
Senior Brittany Cyr (Southington, Connecticut) was 1-for-3 at the plate while adding her fourth stolen base on the season. Right fielder Abby Johnson (Chelmsford, Massachusetts) had the fourth Bobcat hit, going 1-for-2 against the Boilermaker pitching.
In her first at bat in the third, Lindsley reached first on a base hit to right field. Quinnipiac took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth when she rounded the bases with her first homerun of the year and 3rd of her career. Johnson followed with a single up the middle and reached third on two consecutive ground ball outs, but a strikeout ended the inning and left the runner on.
After five scoreless innings pitched by Lindsley, Purdue led off the sixth with a single to center and the second batter reached on a fielder's choice. A double steal put both runners in scoring position while Lindsley recorded her third strikeout for the first out. A triple to center scored both runs and ended Lindsley's day on the mound. Sydney Robey (Glenmoore, Pennsylvania) came in to get the final two outs.
Against Northern Illinois, starting pitcher Casey Herzog (Wappingers Falls, New York) lasted just 1.1 innings, allowing four earned runs off three hits and a walk. The Huskies led off the game with a walk followed by a fly out, but Kayti Grabble singled to advance the runner to third. Herzog proceeded to hit the cleanup batter and two wild pitches scored the first two runs for NIU. The freshman was replaced by Robey in the second who closed out the game, giving up three runs off seven hits. The Bobcat offense totaled just three hits in the game, second baseman Nikki Barba (San Diego) and catcher Dani Edmands (Northborough, Massachusetts) both went 1-for-3 from the plate while freshman Emily Czaja (Palmer, Massachusetts) recorded her first career hit in a 1-for-1 performance.
Quinnipiac will finish up play in Clearwater on Sunday, March 15 when the Bobcats take on Colgate at 9 a.m. Next weekend Quinnipiac will travel to Liberty in Lynchburg, Virginia for another five game tournament.
