CLEARWATER, Florida – The Quinnipiac University softball team capped off their Florida trip with a 9-1 win over Colgate on Sunday afternoon. After dropping their first four games of USF's Michele Smith Spring Break Classic, the Bobcats captured their third win this season and improve to 3-14 while Colgate falls to 4-5 with the loss.
The Quinnipiac offense strung together a season high 12 hits over five innings in the victory. Senior Brittney Cyr (Southington, Connecticut) was one of two Bobcats with a multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and a stolen base. After pitching five scoreless innings and going 2-for-2 with a homerun yesterday in a loss against Purdue, senior Hannah Lindsley (Narragansett, Rhode Island) recorded two RBIs, one run scored and went 3-for-4. Second basemen Nikki Barba (San Diego, California) and catcher Dani Edmands (Northborough, Massachusetts) each scored two runs and were 1-for-3 against the Colgate pitchers. Barba also added her team leading sixth and seventh RBIs on the season.
Starting pitcher Sydney Robey (Glenmoore, Pennsylvania) picked up her second win (2-4) with a lights out performance on the mound. The junior pitched the complete five inning game, facing 20 batters and striking out six. Robey allowed just one run – zero earned – while giving up four hits and one walk.
On her way to retiring the Raiders in the first, Robey picked up two strikeouts including a punch out to end the inning with a runner on third. The Bobcats jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after the first inning on a walk and three singles. Barba secured a leadoff walk while Cyr reached on a fielder's choice bunt and moved the runner to second off a throwing error by the pitcher. Quinnipiac loaded the bases when Edmands was hit by a pitch. Lindsley and freshman Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California) hit back-to-back singles to score the first two Bobcat runs. Edmands also came home off an error by the catcher. Keilani Finley (Alameda, California) singled to third which brought home Lindsley for the inning's fourth run.
Robey retired the side in the second and the Bobcats added two more runs off another three hits. Cyr tallied her first single and stole second to get in scoring position. Edmands' hit home Cyr and advanced to third off a Lindsley single. The catcher came around to score off Magana's ground out to the shortstop.
Barba singled to shortstop and batted home two RBIs in the third to give Quinnipiac an 8-0 advantage. Each side scored a run in the fifth, with Colgate finally getting on the score board off a single to short and a throwing error.
Quinnipiac will resume play next weekend when they travel to Liberty in Lynchburg, Virginia for another five game tournament. The Bobcats will take on Toledo on Friday, March 20 at 10 a.m. before meeting Saint Francis at 1 p.m.
