
QU Women's Lacrosse Drops Non-Conference Game at Vermont, 15-7

BURLINGTON, Vermont – The wind was howling from Virtue Field but the Catamounts proved to be the tougher test for the Bobcats on Wednesday afternoon. Vermont defeated Quinnipiac, 15-7, in the 12th all-time meeting between these two regional foes. Quinnipiac drops to 0-6 on the year while Vermont climbs back over .500 at 4-3.
Continuing a grueling six-game road swing, the Bobcats were led by three players who tallied three points each. Kyra Ochwat (Farmingdale, New York), Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) and Aileen Carey (Long Beach, New York) all posted three points to lead Quinnipiac's offense in the Wednesday non-conference contest.
Ochwat extended her multi-point streak to 15 straight games while Babstock and Carey's three-point game set and matched a season-high, respectively. Kathleen DeVito (Glastonbury, Connecticut) added two goals to give her 12 on the season and 11 in the last four games.
Vermont, a team that had given No. 6 nationally-ranked Boston College a run for their money earlier in the season, picked up their first home win of the year. Jessica Roach could not be stopped as she tallied eight points on seven goals and one assist while Vanessa VanderZalm posted two goals and two assists in the Catamount victory.
The Catamounts struck early and often in this one as Vermont jumped out to a 10-2 halftime lead and stretched the lead to as many as, 15-4, before the Bobcats ended the game on a 3-0 run in the final 13:40 of play.
Roach quickly imposed her will as she posted back-to-back goals less than two minutes apart to make it 5-0 Vermont early. Babstock responded to the VT run with her second goal of the season to cut the deficit to four and Ochwat later tallied a goal to push the gap to 7-2 Catamounts. Both Bobcat goals were assisted by Carey as she junior midfielder leads the team with six assists on the season.
Both sides traded goals in the early stages of the second half as Ochwat blasted home an unassisted marker and DeVito netted her first goal of the game to make it 12-4 with just under 20 minutes remaining.
Vermont, however put any comeback attempt to bed as Vermont scored three straight goals to open up their biggest lead of the game, 15-4, with 13:40 remaining.
The Bobcats did respond well at the end of the game as Babstock first found Ochwat open for the senior attack's third goal and second straight game with a hat trick. Carey followed with her first goal of the game on an assist from Carey and DeVito wrapped up the scoring with her second goal with 33 seconds remaining.
Time of possession stayed with Vermont throughout as the Catamounts finished the game leading in shots, 34-14, and draw controls, 14-10. That advantage was also aided on by 22 Quinnipiac turnovers compared to just 15 for the Catamounts. Neither team scored a free position goal while the QU tandem of Samantha Tilts (Port Washington, New York) and Kyle Larkin (Holbrook, New York) combined for nine saves.
Babstock led the Bobcats with five draw controls and two caused turnovers as this marked her best game of the 2015 season. Larkin posted three ground balls in addition to her five saves in goal. Freshman Kiera Kelly (West Islip, New York) finished with two ground balls while Ochwat rounded out her day with two draw controls as well as her three markers.
Quinnipiac continues non-conference play with a Saturday game at UMass Lowell slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. from Cushing Field. The 2015 season is the Riverhawks' first season as a NCAA Div. I program. These two sides met in the 2014 Fall season with Quinnipiac coming out on top, 14-6, against UMass Lowell.
