Quinnipiac
HAMDEN, Conn. - After returning from one of its longest road trips of the season, the Quinnipiac men's basketball team will embark on one of its shortest ones as it travels up I-91 to face intrastate rival Hartford on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. contest.
The Bobcats are coming off a draining two-game trip to Buffalo, which saw them drop a closely-contested game at Niagara on Friday 76-72 and then bounce back to defeat Canisius 78-76 on Saturday in a game which came right down to the final second. The Canisius game featured a 70-footer from sophomore guard Ayron Hutton at the first-half buzzer (which made No. 4 on ESPN SportsCenter's Top 10 plays of the day) and a frenetic finish which saw the Golden Griffins rally from 10 down with 38 seconds left to have three chances to win or tie in the final four seconds.
The Bobcats held on, though, due largely to their efforts on the glass, where they held a 45-33 edge for the game, including 28-11 in the first half after they overcame an early 12-point deficit to take the lead at the break on the Hutton shot. Quinnipiac is currently tied for the national lead in offensive rebounds per game (18.0 per game) and has led the nation in at least one rebounding category in each of the last five years, including rebounding margin for each of the last two.
Quinnipiac won the Canisius game despite playing without leading post scorer Chaise Daniels (Meriden, Conn.), who was injured on Friday against Niagara and did not dress. Leading scorer Giovanni McLean (Bronx, N.Y.) also went down with an injury in the first half and missed 20 minutes, returning with 11 minutes to go and scoring 10 of his 12 points in the final eight minutes, keeping his streak going of scoring in double figures in every game in a Quinnipiac uniform (6-for-6).
Also providing a big effort for Quinnipiac was senior guard James Ford, Jr. (Hopewell, Va. - pictured), who scored a season-high 13 points. He also guarded high-scoring Malcolm McMillan on defense, who came into the game leading the MAAC in scoring at over 23 points per game, and held him to only nine points on the day. Junior forward Donovan Smith (Chicago, Ill.), who made his first career start stepping in for Daniels, had a team-high 14 points, 12 of which came in the second half.
Quinnipiac holds a 17-6 all-time lead in the series with Hartford, and 7-2 at the Division I level, although Hartford won last year's meeting in Hamden 54-50. Head Coach Tom Moore earned an 85-79 win over Hartford in his Quinnipiac debut on November 11, 2007, giving him his first NCAA Division I head coaching win.
After facing Hartford, the Bobcats will next return home to face Boston University on Sunday for a 2 p.m. contest, before an eight-day break for final exams.
