WEST LONG BRANCH, New Jersey – The Quinnipiac field hockey team fell to the Monmouth Hawks Sunday afternoon, 3-1, in their second to last MAAC game of the regular season at "So Sweet A Cat" Field. With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 7-10 (4-1 MAAC) while the Hawks improve to 7-9 (4-0 MAAC).
Felicia Costanzo (Lakeland, New York) scored the lone goal for Quinnipiac off a penalty corner to tally her sixth goal of the season. Costanzo is just one goal shy of tying Savanna Reilly (Hamden, Connecticut) for the most on the team. Megan Osanitsch (Harwinton, Connecticut) picked up the lone assist for the Bobcats, her fourth of the season.
Goalkeeper Megan Conaboy (Clarks Summitt, Pennsylvania) recorded three saves to add her to her season total of 94 as she approaches her third consecutive 100-save season.
Reilly led the Bobcats with two shots in the game, including one on goal while Meghan McCullough recorded the game's only defensive save.
After both teams played to a scoreless first half with strong defensive play, the offense picked up in the season half. The Hawks scored the first goal of the game with 34:10 to play in the second half after Alyssa Ercolino put home a rebound off one of Monmouth's eight penalty corners to take a 1-0 lead.
Just 2:40 after the Monmouth goal, Quinnipiac responded with a goal of their own off a penalty corner to tie the game, 1-1. On the Bobcats lone penalty corner, Haley Swartz (Downington, Pennsylvania) inserted the ball for the Bobcats from the far side. Swartz played the ball short to Osanitsch where she ripped a shot from the left side of the circle towards the cage and Costanzo deflected Osanitsch's shot into the back of the cage for the goal.
Ercolino answered and gave Monmouth the lead for good with her game-winning goal with 13:19 left to play in the second half. After a broken play in the offensive side of the field, Ercolino corralled a loose ball and dribbled to the left side of the circle where she rifled a reverse chip shot past a diving Conaboy to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead. Ercolino potted two goals for the Hawks, her second consecutive multi-goal game.
As time winded down in the second half, Meg Donahue tallied her third goal of the season for the Hawks after collecting the ball at the top of the circle and blasting a shot low near the right post past Conaboy to give Monmouth a 3-1 advantage.
The Quinnipiac field hockey team will return to the field on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 12 P.M. when they host Fairfield in the regular season finale at the QU Field Hockey Turf Complex. With a win, the Bobcats will secure at least the No. 2 seed in the MAAC Tournament to be held Nov. 6-8.
