NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac baseball team fell to the Southern Connecticut State Owls 4-1 Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the annual City Series. It is the second straight season the Bobcats have fallen in the championship game after losing to Yale last season.
Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut) led the Bobcats at the plate going 1 for 3 with the only RBI while Rob Pescitelli (West Islip, New York) was 1 for 3 with a walk and both John Bodenhamer (Maple Valley, Washington) and Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Connecticut) each picked up singles in the loss.
Matthew Payero (Corona, New York) walked twice and scored the only run of the game on a sacrifice fly from Batten.
Starting pitcher Robert Hitt (Suffield, Connecticut) was on cruise control through the first three innings for the Bobcats, not allowing a hit while striking out three batters. In the fourth inning, Hitt allowed two runs on four hits, before his night came to an end. Hitt finished his outing with 3 2/3 innings pitched, allowing two runs on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
The Bobcats singled in the second, third and fourth innings but could not come up with anything to advance the runner past second base.
Southern Connecticut scored two runs in the fourth inning as Nick Lambert scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch from Hitt before Greg Zullo singled to right center field to score Mike Demarti for the game-winning run.
The Owls add two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as Jim Palmer opened up the scoring as he came home on a wild pitch from Mike Davis (Sandy Hook, Connecticut). Later in the at bat, Lambert grounded out to Batten at shortstop to score Jake Lieberm and give the Owls a 4-0 lead.
Quinnipiac got a run back in the top of the eighth inning as Payero drew a one-out walk where he then advanced to second and third on two separate throwing errors on pickoff attempts by Owls' pitcher Jake Santamaria. With Payero on third base, Batten lifted a fly ball to right field deep enough to score Payero.
The Quinnipiac baseball team has wrapped up competition with the completion of the City Series and will return to action with a four game series in Boone, North Carolina against Appalachian State from Feb. 26-28.
