HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac University men's soccer head coach Eric Da Costa was named Northeast Region Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) after leading the Bobcats to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Regular Season Title and the top seed of the league tournament.
The regular-season title was Quinnipiac's third straight dating back to the 2012 season. Quinnipiac claimed the Northeast Conference Regular-Season Title before earning back-to-back MAAC Regular-Season Titles in 2013 and 2014. In 2013, Da Costa guided the Bobcats to their first-ever NCAA Tournament and a first round clash with national powerhouse, UConn.
The 2014 season saw a 10-4-5 record which included a 13-game unbeaten streak to close out the campaign. Quinnipiac hosted the MAAC Championships, falling short in the Semifinals by way of penalty kicks. Along with team success came individual success, as five players were recognized by the MAAC at the annual awards banquet – headlined by a second consecutive Goalkeeper of the Year award for Borja Angoitia (Bilbao, Spain). Since the 2012 season, 16 members of the program have been recognized with conference laurels.
Da Costa has a 74-70-38 record during his time at Quinnipiac, with the program really hitting stride over the last three seasons. The team is 29-14-15 since the beginning of the 2012 season.
The NSCAA Regional Coach of the Year is Da Costa's second since taking over in 2005. Da Costa was named NSCAA/Adidas North Atlantic Division I Coach of the Year in just his third season as the Bobcats' coach as well as being named a finalist for the NSCAA/Adidas Division I National Coach of the Year. In 2012, his peers tabbed him NEC Coach of the Year.
The award presentation will take place during the College Coaches reception, at the NSCAA National Convention in Philadelphia, Pa., on Thursday, January 15, 2015 from 5:00-6:00 p.m. at the Marriott-Liberty Ballroom.
