"We have a very young and talented team and they're still learned how to compete amongst the high level of competition we come to expect in the meets we scheduled," said Quinnipiac head coach Carolyn Martin. "We still need to work on packing up better as a team and moving past our competition in these rather large field of competitors but we'll use this meet as an experience to grow off and learn as we move into our championship season."
Coach Martin and her Bobcats had their work cut out for them on Saturday as several national powers such as all top five teams as well as Brown, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi State and Johns Hopkins have proven to be dominant cross country programs at the NCAA Div. I level.
Once again leading the way for Quinnipiac on the afternoon was their sophomore sensation Niamh Ashe (East Islip, N.Y.) who placed 53rd overall with a time of 21:12. Racing in her second career Paul Short Run, Ashe bested her time of 21:16 from a year ago by four seconds. In addition, Ashe extends her streak as she now has placed first on the team in all eight of her career appearances as a Bobcat.
Joining Ashe in the Top 100 overall on Saturday was junior Tracy Campbell (Wall Township, N.J.). As Bobcat fans have grown accustomed to throughout the years, Ashe and Campbell combined to finish as the fastest two Bobcats for the fourth time since 2012 in eight opportunities. Campbell clocked in at 21:42 on Saturday, easily the fastest time of her career at the Paul Short Run, which was good enough for 93rd place overall.
The Bobcats' dominant freshmen duo of Kaleigh Roberts (Higganum, Conn.) and Emily Wolff (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) crossed the line just hundredths of a second apart as the two combined for a 137th and 138th place result, respectively. Roberts (22:04) continues her strong start to the season, finishing no worse than third on the team in her three appearances while Wolff (22:04), the reigning ECAC Rookie of the Week, continues to adjust well to the new courses and altitude in the Northeast after having run in-altitude her entire career prior to 2014.
Rounding out the field for the Bobcats on Saturday was junior Medinah Nabadduka (Windsor, Conn.) and sophomore Cameron Chaplen (Thomaston, Conn.). Nabadduka's time of 22:47 is more than two minutes faster than her previous career best at the Paul Short Run as it earned her a 215th place result. Chaplen also impressed as she placed 225th overall with a time of 22:57 in her first career appearance in the event.
Quinnipiac returns to action next weekend as they'll travel to Boston, Mass. to compete in the New England Championships set to begin at 11:00 am from Franklin Park.
