NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Sophomore Niamh Ashe (East Islip, N.Y.) posted another dominant performance to lead Quinnipiac women's cross country to a 7th place finish (out of 20 teams) at the CCSU Mini Meet from Stanley Quarter Park on Friday afternoon. Ashe was backed by three other underclassmen as four of the five top finishers for Quinnipiac (226 points) were all either sophomore or freshmen Bobcat runners. Northeast powerhouse Boston College (52 points) claimed the victory amongst a tightly contested leaderboard that included other prestigous programs such as Providence (58), Yale (77) and New Hampshire (112).
Head coach Carolyn Martin had her young squad ready for this warmup meet that serves as the final event before the MAAC Championship held at Holmdel Park on Friday, Oct. 31. Quinnipiac will be looking to upend the Iona Gaels who've won the previous nine straight MAAC Championships.
Ashe once again led the way for Quinnipiac on the afternoon as she placed 13th overall with a time of 10:27.60. Racing in her first career CCSU Mini Meet, Ashe posted the fastest time of the day for the Bobcats as she now extends her streak to nine straight career appearances in which she has finished as the fastest Bobcat.
Following up Ashe in second place on the team was sophomore classmate Cameron Chaplen (Thomaston, Conn.) who claimed 29th place overall, out of 128 runners, with a time of 10:46.82. Chaplen was easily one of the most improved Bobcats from last year's CCSU Mini Meet as she moved up 36 spots and was nearly 18 seconds faster than her 2013 results in the same event (65th, 11:04.01).
Next in line for Quinnipiac was the lone upperclassmen racing in the varsity event as junior Ashley Carle (Jackson, N.J.) picked up a 50th place result in the overall standings, good enough for third-best on the team. Her time of 11:02.05 was good enough for a Top 50 finish in what was her first career appearance in the CCSU Mini Meet of her four-year career.
Rounding out the field for the Bobcats were a pair of freshmen in Harmony Grodsky (Upper Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Katey Veron (Franklin Square, N.Y.). Both of the Bobcat rookies packed up well in the crowded field of 128 runners and placed 65th and 69th, respectively. The fourth place finish for Grodsky (11:13.46) and fifth place finish for Veron (11:18.30) amongst the field of Bobcat runners set a new personal-best for each as they both are already making strong improvements in their first year as a Bobcat.
Quinnipiac will now look to claim their first MAAC Championship on Friday from Holmdel Park as the Bobcats are set to begin at 12:00 pm. A win would dethrone the nine-time defending champ Gaels as well as give the Bobcats their ninth conference title in the last 10 years after claiming the Northeast Conference crown for eight straight seasons before the move to the MAAC in 2013-14.
