SHIPPING OFF TO BOSTON
The Quinnipiac University men's soccer team travels to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to take on Boston College in a nonconference affair set for 4 p.m. at Newton Campus Soccer Field. Quinnipiac opened the year with a 2-0 win over Northeastern at home while Boston College is coming off a 1-0 win over Boston University. The game is Boston College's first at home for the 2007 season.A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING
Danilo Schiavon had a hand in both goals scored by Quinnipiac in their season home-opening 2-0 win over Northeaster on Saturday, Sept. 1. Schiavon set up Ross McGibney for the game's first goal. The assist was Schiavon's first assist of his career. Schiavon would later score when he got the rebound off a missed shot by Graciano Brito. Brito got a rebound off a shot on the left side and took a shot. The shot was stopped by the keeper and driven to the lower left corner by Schiavon.SOUTH FLORIDA'S LOSS...
...Is the Bobcats' gain! Sophomore Freddy Hall, who transferred from the University of South Florida and sat out last season, started his first game in net for Quinnipiac. Hall was tested from the start, but stopped all eight shots taken on goal for his first career shutout in his first career start.
ONWARD AND UPWARD
After a disappointing 2006 season, the Bobcats now look to improve and compete for the NEC title. The Bobcats open their regular season against Northeastern, who went 8-10-2 overall last year and finished 6-4-1 in CAA conference play. Northeastern senior forward Greg Kilkenny and sophomore midfielder Alexander Volk were both named to the pre-season All-CAA team.LEADERS OF THE PAC
Senior Hobson Bradford and junior Graciano Brito assume leadership roles as co-captains this season. Bradford is a three-year letterwinner who has started over 30 games on defense over the last three years. Last year Brito, in only his second year of organized soccer, led the team in goals (4) and points scored (10). The co-captains are asked to take the reins of a young Bobcat team, including nine sophomores and nine freshmen.INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR
Quinnipiac boasts one of the most geographically diverse rosters in the country with 11 players from outside the U.S. Players hail from Canada, Bermuda, Ireland, Brazil, France, Belgium, Barbados, Cape Verde, and Sweden.MARS ATTACKS
One of the newcomers to the Bobcats this year is freshman Dwayne Mars, from St. Michael, Barbados. Mars gained extensive experience playing for several Barbados national teams including the 2005 Barbados U17 National Team and the 2006 U20 team. Mars was named Most Outstanding Player at the U17 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, and looks to make an immediate contribution with his speed and ability to finish around the goal.BEYOND HIS YEARS
Another young Bobcat ready to make his mark is freshman Rodrigo Uchoa from Londrina, Brazil. Like Mars, Uchoa has a wealth of experience at the international level. Named to the All-Panama First Team three times, Uchoa's experience combined with his size and strength allow him to compete for a starting spot at the midfield or forward position.DA COSTA MAKING WAVES
Head coach Eric Da Costa has been selected to a second term on the Regional Advisory Committee for NCAA Division I Men's Soccer. Da Costa served on the committee last season, his second as Bobcats head coach, and has been retained for a three year term, expiring in 2010. The committee looks to expand and promote the sport of soccer throughout the United States.
