John L. Lahey
- Induction:
- 1998
Quinnipiac University President John L. Lahey has been a driving force behind the institution’s elevation of its athletic programs to the Division I level. Since his arrival in 1987, Lahey has transformed the school from a locally respected college focusing on careeroriented programs to an institution now ranked among the top regional universities in the Northeast. The athletic programs have grown from seven men’s and fi ve women’s intercollegiate varsity sports to current levels of 21 varsity sports. The women’s soccer (added in 1987), men’s lacrosse (1991), women’s fi eld hockey (1994), women’s lacrosse (1997), men’s and women’s indoor track (1998–99) teams all have become a part of the Quinnipiac athletics program during Lahey’s tenure. Under Lahey’s direction, Quinnipiac opened the new and expanded athletic center, including a new athletic training room, basketball and tennis courts and indoor track.
