Alex Zomerfeld enters his eighth season as a member of the Quinnipiac men's lacrosse coaching staff in 2023-24. He was promoted to Associate Head Coach on May 10, 2019.
QU has recorded 33 total wins (22 in MAAC play) over his first seven seasons with the Bobcats as an assistant (2017-23).
Quinnipiac went 7-6 overall most recently in the spring of 2023. QU finished the regular season as the league's top scoring offense (12.62 goals per game), and also rank No. 1 in the MAAC in assists per game (7.69 APG).
QU went 2-11 (1-5 in 2022). The Bobcats defeated UMass Lowell in the season-opener, and also defeated Canisius in MAAC action.
The Bobcats went 4-3 (4-2 MAAC) in 2021 under the help of Zomerfeld to earn the title of MAAC Co-Regular Season Champions. Quinnipiac finished the spring campaign with a 4-2 league record, winning three straight home games at the QU Lacrosse Stadium in Hamden from April 7-17. QU defeated St. Bonaventure on the road on March 27, then downed Siena, Manhattan and Canisius in MAAC play in Hamden during the month of April.
Zomerfeld wrapped up his second season as the Bobcats' Associate Head Coach in 2020. Quinnipiac’s season was cut short after just six games due to the COVID-19 virus. The Bobcats did not play a MAAC contest in 2020.
In 2019, Zomerfeld helped lead Quinnipiac men’s lacrosse to a 9-7 (5-2 MAAC) record and the program's third-ever appearance in the MAAC Tournament championship contest. Quinnipiac recorded a winning MAAC record for the fourth time in six seasons since joining the conference in 2013-14, earning a No. 2 seed in the postseason tournament.
Zomerfeld joined the Bobcats after serving as an assistant coach at Bryant, his alma mater, under Mike Pressler. While with the Bulldogs, Zomerfeld helped coordinate the offense with assistant coach Tom Compitello, and organized all tournaments and prospect days. He will work with the Quinnipiac offense in his new role with the Bobcats.
A native of Port Jefferson Station, New York, Zomerfeld spent one year as an assistant coach at Comsewogue High School on Long Island, serving as the team's offensive coordinator. He also spent two summers as a coach for the Team Long Island U15 club team, and worked for three summers with the Comsewogue Lacrosse Camp.
As a player at Bryant, Zomerfeld was a Team MVP in the 2013 season and served as a captain for the 2014 squad, leading both teams to the NCAA Tournament (the first two in program history). In 2014, Zomerfeld's Bulldogs pulled a big 10-9 upset over Syracuse to advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals.
Zomerfeld was a two-time first-team All-NEC selection, and was a member of Team North in the USILA/LaxWorld North/South Game. He also was college teammates with current Quinnipiac assistant coach Mason Poli, who works with the Bobcat defense. After his collegiate career concluded, he was drafted 30th overall by the Charlotte Hounds of Major League Lacrosse in the 2015 supplemental draft, before playing in two games for the New York Lizards.
A business management major with a psychology minor, Zomerfeld graduated from Bryant in 2014 with a bachelor of science degree.
