QU athletes, coaches and staff participated in Blackout Day by wearing "Equity Week" t-shirts at practice / training on Thursday, Feb. 20 to represent the cohesive One Bobcat Nation philosophy we share as we celebrate each of our differences.
The Bobcats also participated in a Hamden School Reading Initiative, where the department partnered with Shepherd Glen Elementary & Helen Street Elementary to have student-athletes go into their classrooms and read books related to the theme "Celebrating Differences." QU student-athletes also engaged in discussions with the students about celebrating each other's differences & why this topic is important. 39 total student-athletes representing nine different sports participated in the readings.
As part of Equity Week, Quinnipiac athletes also joined together for a movie night to watch The Loyola Project, a documentary about the 1963 Loyola Ramblers men's basketball team and the Game of Change. The film details how the Ramblers, led by coach George Ireland, broke down racial barriers in college basketball on their path to becoming NCAA champions.
HEAR WHAT THEY'RE SAYING
"Equity Week is a time for education, reflection, bringing awareness and coming together as a community. Throughout the week, we are asking all members of the Athletic Department to meaningfully reflect on how celebrating our own unique differences, and those of our teammates, coaches and support staff is important to success and growth. Wearing our black shirts all together spreads awareness and sheds light on recognizing each person as a member of the Bobcat community for exactly who they are.
Celebrating differences makes us stronger because each person enhances the collective work we are doing.
We are all different and that is what makes life interesting and impactful. Each team and department within our Bobcat community is successful because we are all unique." - Kristen Casamento, Associate Athletic Director for Academic Support
"Realizing our differences and accepting them in a positive manner creates a better society that values all individuals for who they are." - Anonymous Men's Lacrosse student-athlete
"On and off the court we rise together. Every voice matters, every story counts. Equity is our game plan." - Anonymous Women's Volleyball student-athlete
"Celebrating differences in our cultures is important so everyone feels like they belong." - Anonymous Field Hockey student-athlete
