HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac field hockey goalkeeper Cristina Torres has been named to Team Spain for the upcoming 2023 Field Hockey Junior World Cup in Chile. The sophomore was announced as a member of the squad by Team Spain in November.
"We are so proud of Cristina for earning this opportunity to compete against top international competition and talent," Quinnipiac field hockey Head Coach Nina Klein said. "Anytime an athlete is granted an opportunity to train and play on the national stage, it is a testament to their dedication, hard work, and passion for the game. We wish Cristina and the Spanish National Team luck in the 2023 Junior World Cup."
"It is an honor to have the opportunity to represent my country in the Junior World Cup. I am so excited to compete against the top players in the world and bring that experience back to Quinnipiac."
A long-time member of Team Spain, Torres has been representing her native country since 2018. Torres has won a total of six gold medals as a representative of the Spanish National Team and has earned Top Goalkeeper laurels in four different tournaments with Team Spain.
The 2023 Field Hockey Junior World Cup begins in Chile on Nov. 29. Spain will compete in 'Pool B' and have been drawn alongside Argentina, Zimbabwe, and Korea in their group, opening against Argentina on Nov. 29.
In the 10th-ever Field Hockey Junior World Cup, Spain is looking for its first-ever championship victory in the tournament. Entering the event, Spain has the seventh most wins in the tournament (24) and the seventh most goals scored (110).
