HAMDEN, Conn. – QU men's soccer returns to Hamden for another MAAC matchup on Saturday, Oct. 15, hosting Iona at 2:00 PM.
THE MATCHUP: vs. IONA
- Iona is 2-0-2 in MAAC play so far this year (8 points), sitting just one spot below Quinnipiac (9 points).
- The Gaels played to a 3-3 tie their most recent time out at Canisius.
- Iona is led offensively by Camil Azzam Ruiz, Sergio Gonzalez Fernandez, and Nathaniel David – who all have scored twice in 2022.
- QU is 4-6-4 vs. Iona since 2007. Iona has taken five of the last six meetings since 2017.
- Quinnipiac men's soccer earned its third MAAC win of the 2022 campaign on Wednesday night, downing Rider by the final score of 3-0 on the road.
- Sam McCann scored each of QU's first two goals of the contest, then Alexander Stjernegaard added an insurance strike in the 69th minute. Erik Langwagen assisted on a pair of goals.
- Karl Netzell made five saves for the Bobcats, earning his second shutout of the year.
- With the victory, QU moves to 3-1-0 in MAAC play (8-3-1 overall).
AMONG THE NATION'S BEST OFFENSES
- The Bobcats have scored 2.83 goals per game so far this year, which leads the MAAC and ranks No. 2 nationally.
- QU has tallied 3.0 assists per game, which ranks No. 5 nationally and leads the conference.
- 18 different Bobcats have recorded a goal or an assist this year.
- Senior captain David Bercedo leads QU in goals (9) and points (21).
- Sam McCann has six goals – the second-highest total on the team.
- Alexander Stjernegaard has a team-best eight assists in his first year at QU. He also has four goals.
- Tomas Svecula has chipped in with four goals and four assists, and Jason Budhai has tallied three goals and three assists.
- The Bobcats were selected No. 4 in the 2022 Men's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced by the MAAC office on Thursday, Aug. 18.
- QU earned 78 points in the poll, finishing just behind Marist, Rider and Fairfield for the top spot.
- Senior forward Brage Aasen – Quinnipiac's leading goal scorer from a season ago – was named to the Preseason All-MAAC team for Quinnipiac. Aasen recorded a team-best 11 goals to go along with three assists last year. The All-MAAC selection from a season ago has tallied 17 goals and 13 assists over his first 43 collegiate games.
- Former Quinnipiac standout Eric Da Costa will enter his 18th season at the helm of the Bobcats men's soccer program in the fall of 2022. He is the longest tenured men's soccer coach in Quinnipiac's NCAA history.
- A product of Quinnipiac's strong soccer tradition, Da Costa's formula for success and his reputation for assembling winning teams are evident after 16 seasons at his alma mater. Da Costa has a 136-120-52 record during his time at Quinnipiac, and has led the Bobcats to a postseason conference tournament appearance in nine of the last 10 seasons (2012 in the NEC, 2013-spring 2021 in the MAAC).
- Since joining the MAAC prior to the 2013 season, Quinnipiac has appeared in four MAAC Tournament title contests (2013, 2016, 2018, spring 2021). Under Da Costa's tutelage, the Bobcats have posted an impressive 55-23-11 mark in regular season MAAC games.
- Quinnipiac's fall 2022 schedule features 18 regular season contests in total.
- The Bobcats will host nine home games at the QU Soccer Stadium in Hamden.
- QU begins MAAC play on Wednesday, Sept. 28, when the Bobcats travel to Loudonville, N.Y. for a date with Siena. The Bobcats then return home to the QU Soccer Field for their MAAC home opener against in-state rival Fairfield on Oct. 1.
- The Bobcats won nine games in the fall 2021 campaign, going 6-3 at the QU Soccer Stadium in Hamden. QU won five consecutive games to begin the season, defeating Boston College (first time since 2007), UMass Lowell, Sacred Heart, CCSU and Harvard.
- The Bobcats received votes twice in the fall of 2021 for the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll – which recognizes the top Division I programs in the nation. Da Costa and the Bobcats claimed three All-MAAC awards at the end of the regular season: Brage Aasen: All-MAAC First Team, Paulo Soares: All-MAAC Second Team, Sam McCann: MAAC All-Rookie Team.
- Quinnipiac finished 9-8 in total (4-6 MAAC).
