#1 Quinnipiac Extends Unbeaten Run to 17 Games
HAMILTON, N.Y. – Hobey Baker candidate Zach Metsa scored twice and added an assist to lead #1 nationally-ranked Quinnipiac to a 5-1 victory over Colgate on Friday night in Hamilton. The win runs Quinnipiac's current unbeaten streak to 17 games and improves the team's record to 18-1-3 and 9-0-1 in ECAC Hockey play.
The 17-game unbeaten streak is the longest for Quinnipiac since the program opened the 2015-16 season with a 15-0-2 record. That season ended with a 32-4-7 record and a spot in the National Championship game.
The Bobcats struck early at Colgate on Friday night, as Metsa scored on a deflection just 57 seconds into the game.
Wyatt Bongiovanni picked up a loose puck in front of the net and doubled the Bobcats' lead with 3:30 to play in the period. The goal would end up being the game-winning tally, which is the 13th GWG of the senior's career, the most of any Quinnipiac player in the last decade.
Colgate got on the board 27 seconds later and the two teams proceeded to play a scoreless second period, taking a 2-1 margin into the third.
Quinnipiac took the game over in the third period, scoring at 11:24, 4:33, and 1:37. The first tally was a highlight reel backhander by Metsa and the second featured Oliver Chau settling a pass with his skate and then finishing the play with a nifty deke to increase the lead to 4-1.
Guus van Nes scored an empty-netter to wrap things up and send the Bobcats to #8 Cornell with another league win.
