Bongiovanni, Smilanic Each Score Twice in Win
HAMDEN, Conn. – #5/5 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey scored five unanswered goals in the final two periods to defeat Arizona State on Friday night at the People's United Center. Senior captain Wyatt Bongiovanni and sophomore Ty Smilanic each scored twice for the Bobcats in the 5-3 win.
The Sun Devils scored twice in the first period to jump ahead of the Bobcats and then scored 75 seconds into the second to extend the lead to three.
Junior Jayden Lee got the hosts on the board five minutes later after two tremendous passes by Ethan de Jong and TJ Friedmann set up Lee on the back post for his second goal of the year.
Less than three minutes later, Smilanic notched a powerplay tally to cut the deficit to one. Bongiovanni and Zach Metsa earned helpers on the third of the year for the sophomore.
Quinnipiac continued to apply pressure in the third period, but was unable to equalize until Bongiovanni fired a top-shelf laser past the ASU goaltender to tie things up with 10:03 to play in regulation.
The captain struck again just minutes later when Guus van Nes sent him on a breakaway and he finished through the five hole to give Quinnipiac the lead.
Smilanic sealed the deal in the final minute as he deflected a neutral zone pass and then watched as the puck caromed off the boards and just snuck across the goal line of ASU's empty net.
