
Merino Named Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach

Previously Worked at Sacred Heart, RPI, Canisius and Two Stops at Quinnipiac
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac Department of Athletics has announced that Sergio Merino has returned to Quinnipiac as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach after previously working at Quinnipiac as a strength and conditioning assistant coach from 2012-14.
"Being able to add a coach and person like Sergio to our staff is tremendous for our entire athletic department," Associate Athletic Director/Director of Athletic Performance Brijesh Patel said. "Sergio brings experience, perspectives, credentials and insights that can help our student-athletes and staff become better."
Merino spent the first half of the 2020-21 season as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at Sacred Heart after spending three-and-a-half seasons as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Rensselear Polytechnic Institute (RPI).
"I am honored by the opportunity to return to Quinnipiac Athletics and join Coach B's staff," Merino said. "As a Hamden native who grew up attending sports camps and games at QU, watching the growth and commitment to athletics has been incredible.
"Coach B was my first mentor in the field and afforded me many opportunities I am extremely grateful for. To now be involved in the continued growth of the department and play an integral role in the development of our student-athletes is an exciting time for me as a coach."
Merino joined Sacred Heart Athletics in August 2020 where he directly supervised the strength and conditioning programs for men's and women's basketball, baseball and women's volleyball. At each of his institutions, Merino developed and implemented performance testing, speed, agility, energy systems, strength training and mental performance programs.
He spent three-and-a-half seasons as the head strength and condition coach at RPI from December 2016 through August 2020. He oversaw the entire strength and conditioning department was responsible for the development of football, field hockey and men's golf.
Merino previously was the Director of Athletic Performance at Canisius from August 2014 to December 2016 where he supervised and oversaw the athletic performance department and was an adjunct professor for Kinesiology 420.
Merino also had two stops at Quinnipiac, Ranfone Training Systems and Moore Center for Rehabilitation as well as CCSU.
He is a NSCA Registered Strength and Conditioning Coach, Functional Movement Screen Expert and has certifications as a Precision Nutrition Level One Coach and Reflexive Performance Reset Level One.
Merino graduated from Southern Connecticut State University in December 2009 with a B.S. in Exercise Science Human Performance, California University of Pennsylvania in December 2013 with a M.S. in Exercise Science and Health Promotion, Sport Psychology and Canisius College in December 2016 with a M.S. in Sport Administration.
