Bobcats' Last Time Out
Quinnipiac traveled to Columbus, Ohio to take on the No. 5/5 Ohio State Buckeyes for the final non-conference series of the season. The Bobcats fell to the Buckeyes in two tight contests, both one-goal games.
On Friday, Jan. 24, Quinnipiac was edged, 2-1, in a back-and-forth battle with the Buckeyes. Junior Brooke Bonsteel scored the Bobcats' lone goal in the second period after Ohio State jumped to a 2-0 lead, but the Bobcats could not tie the game. Senior netminder Abbie Ives made 39 saves, which is the second-highest number of saves for her this season. Both teams committed just one penalty each through 60 minutes of play.
The Bobcats and Buckeyes met for the second game of the series on Saturday, Jan. 25 at the OSU Ice Rink. Ohio State scored first, but junior Laura Lundblad tied the game before the final horn of the first period. Lundblad recovered the puck at the edge of the neutral zone off a poke check, skated back across the ice and shot the puc back where she came from past Ohio State's Andrea Braendli. Later, the Buckeyes would take a 3-1 lead at the start of the third period. Junior transfer Taylor Girard scored her first goal as a Bobcat in the third period on a power play to come within one goal of the Buckeyes. Ohio State would hold on to the one-goal lead to earn the second win of the weekend.
Scouting Princeton
The Tigers come to Hamden with a 14-4-1 overall record and a 9-3-1 ECAC record. Princeton has had two weeks off since playing No. 9/9 Harvard on Saturday, Jan. 11. The Tigers went 1-0-1 against Harvard and Dartmouth Jan. 10-11. Princeton tied Harvard, 3-3 in Cambridge and defeated Dartmouth, 7-0.
Sophomore Sarah Fillier leads the Tigers with 34 points on 13 goals and 21 assists, which is ranked second in the conference. Steph Neatby has played 11 games in the net for Princeton, recording a .908 save percentage and 2.55 goals against average with a 7-2-1 record. Neatby played in the net when Quinnipiac and Princeton first met on Oct. 29, making 36 saves in the 4-2 win for the Tigers.
Last Time against the Tigers
Quinnipiac played Princeton on Oct. 29, 2019 for the first matchup in conference play for both teams. The Tigers came out on top in a 4-2 win, despite the Bobcats outshooting the Tigers 38-32. Senior Kenzie Prater and junior Brooke Bonsteel both scored for Quinnipiac, and Ives made 28 saves in the loss. Princeton has won three-straight games against the Bobcats. Quinnipiac's last win against the reigning Ivy League champs came on Dec. 9, 2017 in a 3-1 win.
Adzija, Coutu-Godbout Leading
Sophomore Lexie Adzija and senior Sarah-Eve Coutu-Godbout are leading the Bobcats' offensive charge. Adzija leads the team with 23 points on 10 goals and 13 assists. Coutu-Godbout has recorded a team-high 12 goals and has 17 points on the season. The duo has a combined six power play goals this season with four game-winners. Adzija led the Bobcats' on the faceoff this past weekend against Ohio State, winning 64% of faceoffs through two games.
Scoring All Around
Seven different Bobcats have scored goals in the last four games including Coutu-Godbout, Lundblad, Adzija, Bonsteel, Prater sophomore Zoe Boyd and junior Taylor Girard. Lundblad is currently on a four-game point streak after scoring two goals and two assists over the last four games.
Bonsteel-Lundblad Linking
The duo of Brooke Bonsteel and Laura Lundblad have recorded 11 points combined through the last six games. Bonsteel is fourth on the team in scoring with 13 points on five goals and eight assists. Lundblad has four goals and two assists for six points on the season and currently has a four-game point streak.
Girard Gets Her First
Junior transfer Taylor Girard scored her first goal as a Bobcat on a power play in a 3-2 loss vs Ohio State. Her goal was the only power play goal scored for either team on the weekend. She now has seven points on the season.
Work, Work, Work
The Bobcats are 8-3-1 since Nov. 22 and won four-straight games to open 2020. The team has outscored opponents 17-10 over the last six games.
Non-Conference, Non-Stop
Quinnipiac completed the final non-conference games of the season after a two-game road series with No. 5/5 Ohio State. The Bobcats went 7-3-1 against non-conference opponents in 2019-20. The team outscored non-ECAC opponents 35-17 this season.
Dominant Defensive Core
Quinnipiac's defensive core has allowed 43 goals this season, averaging 1.72 goals against per game, which is ranked sixth in the country. Senior Kenzie Prater leads the team with 38 blocks, followed by Reilly with 33.
Bobcat Special Teams
Quinnipiac currently ranks eighth in the country on the penalty kill (88.9%), going 56-63. The team also ranks ninth in the country on the power play (20.0%), converting 16 out of 80 attempts. Quinnipiac is also least-penalized team in the nation with just 5.4 PIM per game this season.
